What is retail media?

Retail media refers to advertising opportunities that exist on a retailer’s digital platforms, such as their website, app, or even in-store displays. Brands purchase these ads to reach shoppers while they are actively browsing or buying products. Retail media networks, like those from Amazon, Walmart, or Target, allow advertisers to target specific audiences based on purchase data and shopper behavior. This approach helps brands increase product visibility and drive sales directly at the point of purchase.

How does a retail media specialist typically collaborate with brand partners and internal teams to execute successful campaigns?

In a Retail Media role, collaboration is key to delivering effective campaigns. Professionals frequently work with brand partners to understand their marketing goals, provide data-driven recommendations, and align campaign strategies. Internally, they coordinate with analytics, creative, and sales teams to develop assets, set up targeting, and measure performance. This cross-functional teamwork ensures campaigns are tailored, on-brand, and optimized for maximum impact within the retailer's ecosystem.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retail media specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Retail Media Specialist, you need expertise in digital marketing, data analysis, and campaign management, often supported by a relevant bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with retail media platforms (such as Amazon Advertising, Walmart Connect), demand-side platforms (DSPs), and analytics tools like Google Analytics is essential. Strong communication, creativity, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate with brands and optimize campaigns for maximum impact. These skills are crucial for driving sales growth and ensuring brands achieve high visibility and ROI in a competitive retail environment.
