What is retail management?

Retail management is the process of overseeing and coordinating all activities related to the sale of products and services to consumers in a retail environment. This includes tasks such as managing staff, ensuring customer satisfaction, monitoring inventory, handling merchandising, and driving sales performance. Retail managers are responsible for creating a positive shopping experience, meeting sales targets, and ensuring the smooth operation of the store. They also play a key role in implementing company policies and managing budgets.

What are retail management jobs?

Retail management jobs begin with store managers, who are the first line managers at a location. Their responsibilities are to oversee a specific department or, in smaller stores, a shift during working hours. They provide customer service, help out at the register, go over accounting and bookkeeping statements, and perform routine performance reviews. Regional managers’ duties are to oversee the store managers and provide advice and guidance related to sales, human resources, and loss protection. There are also numerous specializations in retail management, such as managers who focus on training, operations, merchandising, or marketing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retail manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Retail Manager, you need strong leadership, inventory management, sales acumen, and typically a degree in business or related field. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, retail analytics software, and scheduling tools is important. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and customer service skills help you motivate teams and resolve issues effectively. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving sales, optimizing operations, and ensuring a positive customer experience in a dynamic retail environment.

What are some common challenges faced by retail managers, and how can they effectively address them?

Retail managers often face challenges such as high staff turnover, inventory management, and meeting sales targets. To address these, it's important to foster a positive team environment through consistent communication and recognition, implement efficient inventory tracking systems, and set clear, achievable goals for staff. Additionally, successful managers stay adaptable and proactive, frequently analyzing store performance and customer feedback to make informed decisions. Building strong relationships with both team members and customers is key to overcoming these challenges and driving store success.

At the heart of Ballerina Farm is a desire to share the beauty, simplicity, and richness of farm life with people everywhere.

The Role

Ballerina Farm is seeking an experienced Retail Manager to lead the overall operations of our Utah retail stores. This individual will be responsible for driving operational excellence while creating an exceptional experience for both customers and employees.

The Retail Manager oversees the entire retail operation, leading a team of retail supervisors and retail associates while ensuring the store operates efficiently, safely, and in alignment with Ballerina Farm's values. This role provides strategic oversight of store operations - including staffing, inventory, merchandising, food and grocery operations, and customer service - while empowering supervisors to lead the day-to-day execution of their departments.

We're looking for a confident, hands-on leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys developing people, and understands that a successful retail operation starts with a strong team culture.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the overall operation of the Midway & Kamas retail stores, ensuring an exceptional customer experience and efficient daily operations.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and accountability to retail supervisors and retail associates, fostering a culture of teamwork, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Build a positive, engaging work environment where employees feel valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, onboard, and develop retail team members in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Coach employees and supervisors through performance management, employee development, recognition, and corrective action as needed.
  • Serve as a visible leader on the sales floor, providing support, direction, and coaching while maintaining a high standard of customer service.
  • Oversee store performance by monitoring operational metrics, sales, labor, inventory, and overall business results.
  • Partner with supervisors to ensure scheduling, merchandising, inventory management, and daily store operations are executed effectively and consistently.
  • Ensure all food and grocery operations comply with company standards, health department regulations, and food safety requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and well-stocked retail environment.
  • Collaborate with company leadership on promotions, seasonal initiatives, operational improvements, and business objectives.
  • Address customer concerns professionally and effectively while creating positive resolutions.
  • Promote clear communication, collaboration, and accountability across the team.
  • Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, employee engagement, and the overall customer experience.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need

  • 5+ years of progressive retail management experience, preferably within grocery, specialty retail, food service, or hospitality.
  • Experience leading multiple departments and developing high-performing teams.
  • Strong operational and business acumen with the ability to balance customer service, employee engagement, and financial performance.
  • Experience overseeing retail environments that include food and grocery products.
  • Current Utah Food Handler Permit (required).
  • Excellent leadership, communication, coaching, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
  • Proficient with point-of-sale systems, inventory management software, and Microsoft Office or Google Workspace.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, twisting, and stocking merchandise.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as business needs require.

What Makes Someone Successful in This Role

The ideal candidate is an operationally strong retail leader who genuinely enjoys developing people. They lead with integrity, communicate clearly, make sound decisions, and create an environment where employees feel motivated to do their best work. They are equally comfortable coaching an employee, solving operational challenges, and stepping onto the sales floor when needed to help the team succeed.
