Job description

Deseret Book is pleased to announce an exciting new collaboration with the Church.

Beginning November 2, 2026, Deseret Book will assume retail operations for the gift shop inside the Church History Museum, followed by the gift shop inside the Beehive House and Lion House Historical Sites in December 2026.

While these locations will operate as Deseret Book stores from a business and staffing perspective, they will continue to serve visitors as Church gift shops.

Position

The Supervisor supports the Shop Manager in the day-to-day leadership of the gift shop, directly overseeing Leads and Associates to ensure every shift reflects the sacred purpose of Temple Square. Leads the full day-to-day operation of the museum's retail store including sales, merchandising, cash handling, and compliance with POS and PCI standards. This role drives results by coaching and mentoring volunteers and team members on their assigned responsibilities. The Supervisor designs compelling window and counter displays, implements VMP, and helps coordinate store events. A growth-minded leader, the incumbent embraces Deseret Book's mission and Cultural Beliefs, operates with a "see it, own it, solve it, do it" mindset, and delivers consistent results across key metrics. As this role is located on Temple Square and in Church buildings, the supervisor will serve as, and direct associates to be ambassadors of the Church, reflecting the light of Jesus Christ in conduct and appearance and ensuring every visitor's experience aligns with the sacred purpose of Temple Square.

Description

  • Highly self-motivated, with a proven history of successfully leading a small team. Leading out in representing the Deseret Book brand voice to both a sales team and customers.

  • Serve as manager-on-duty during assigned shifts, ensure all operations, guest interactions, and employee conduct reflect Church standards.
  • Proactively engage guests and resolve service issues; help patrons select items that enhance their museum experience in an inviting atmosphere consistent with the Church's message.
  • Train and mentor and employees on POS/register operations, PCI compliance, customer service, inventory maintenance, and display techniques; troubleshoot register issues as the point-of-sale expert.
  • Train and mentor Volunteers assigned to the shop, ensuring their service advances the work of the Church and that their primary duties remain distinct from Deseret Book business operations.
  • Drive employee development through ongoing performance coaching and the Store Excellence Checklist, assess, coach, and celebrate results.
  • Communicate team performance, guest feedback, and any concerns related to mission alignment to the Shop Manager in a timely manner.
  • Oversee merchandising and visual presentation, manage shelf stocking, product displays, and window and counter merchandising.
  • Manage daily business operations, monitor sales transactions, ensure proper cash handling and deposit procedures, and complete opening/closing assignments.
  • Maintain accurate inventory, prepare and complete stock counts; assist with reports, schedules, and inventory management.
  • Assist in planning and executing store events.

Required Skills

  • BFOQ - Must possesses a current temple recommend or have a bishop's recommendation
  • Two-year college education or equivalent
  • 2-3 years of retail management experience (merchandising, inventory management, bookkeeping, store operations)plus2+ years of supervisory experience
  • Friendly, approachable demeanor with strong verbal communication skills; able to engage customers in person and by phone daily.
  • Highly self-motivated, with a proven record of successfully leading a team.
  • Proven ability to coach, lead, and develop store associates
  • Proficiency with PC-based point-of-sale systems, with the ability to train others
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Acumatica (P&L)
  • Strong understanding of marketing and visual display techniques
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional customer service skills, with the ability to interact with customers in person and by phone daily (essential function)
  • Prepared to discuss the Church and the gospel of Jesus Christ with visitors in a warm, inviting, and doctrinally appropriate manner
  • Self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach
  • Flexible availability, including days, evenings, Saturdays, and holidays (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas)
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and regularly lift 20 lbs
  • Compliance with Church-approved dress and grooming standards
