Assistant Controller

Location: Dallas, Texas 

Department: Accounting

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Assistant Controller serves as a key leader within the accounting organization and is responsible for the day-to-day accounting, financial reporting, compliance, and control functions for an assigned portfolio of operating assets, development projects, joint ventures, and corporate entities. 


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Accounting Leadership & Oversight 

  • Lead accounting activities for assigned operating assets, development projects, joint ventures, and corporate entities. 
  • Manage, mentor, and develop accounting personnel. 
  • Ensure accurate and timely close processes. 
  • Review general ledger activity, reconciliations, and financial reporting. 
  • Maintain compliance with GAAP and governing agreements. 
  • Participate in acquisition, disposition, financing, and restructuring activities. 
  • Review and approve setup of new projects and entities. 
  • Review and assess the accounting and financial implications of various legal documents, including but not limited to: PSAs, loan/guaranties, leases. 
  • Identify risks; propose and implement risk mitigation strategies. 

Financial Reporting & Controls 

  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting. 
  • Review variance analyses and operating results. 
  • Review lease abstracts and other related lease administration documentation ensuring proper lease accounting treatment per GAAP or other basis of accounting. 
  • Review and provide oversight of accounting team for calculations of estimated operating and tax expense billings and subsequent reconciliations. 
  • Ensure all accounting records and reports are being maintained timely, accurately and in accordance with GAAP or other basis of accounting.  Special consideration to areas such as debt modifications, acquisitions/dispositions, interest capitalization, etc. 
  • Review reports generated for upper management and external users as well as other significant internal reports. 
  • Review Property Budgets/Projections. 
  • Review tax projections and tax preparation workpapers. 
  • Maintain strong internal controls. 
  • Coordinate internal, external, lender, and tenant audits. 
  • Support accounting policies and procedures. 

Treasury & Capital Management 

  • Review bank reconciliations and cash management activities. 
  • Review investor funding requests and capital calls. 
  • Review wire transfers, ACH payments, and banking relationships. 
  • Monitor lender reporting requirements and debt covenant compliance. 
  • Development & Partnership Accounting 
  • Oversee accounting for development projects. 
  • Review development draws and lender compliance. 
  • Ensure accurate partnership accounting and investor reporting. 
  • Coordinate with development teams regarding project costs and cash flows. 

Cross-Functional Partnership 

  • Partner with Development, Asset Management, Operations, Leasing, and Investment teams. 
  • Support investor, lender, and management reporting. 
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning initiatives. 

Team Management 

  • Foster accountability and collaboration. 
  • Provide technical accounting guidance. 
  • Support professional development and succession planning. 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE 

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. 
  • CPA strongly preferred; candidates currently pursuing or willing to pursue CPA certification will also be considered.
  • 6–10 years of progressive accounting experience. 
  • Commercial real estate accounting experience required. 
  • Strong property, partnership and development accounting experience. 
  • Public accounting experience preferred. 
  • Yardi experience strongly preferred.
