What is a retail client manager?

A Retail Client Manager is responsible for maintaining and growing relationships with retail clients, ensuring their needs are met and that they receive high-quality service. This role often involves overseeing client accounts, managing sales targets, coordinating with internal teams, and identifying opportunities to increase client satisfaction and business growth. Retail Client Managers act as the main point of contact for clients, addressing inquiries, resolving issues, and providing strategic advice to help clients achieve their business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retail client manager?

To thrive as a Retail Client Manager, you need strong sales acumen, client relationship management skills, and typically a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software, retail analytics platforms, and POS systems is often required. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities help you build trust and resolve client issues effectively. These skills are crucial for driving sales growth, maintaining client satisfaction, and ensuring long-term business partnerships in the competitive retail sector.

How does a retail client manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet client needs?

A Retail Client Manager often works closely with teams such as merchandising, marketing, supply chain, and finance to ensure client expectations are met and exceeded. They serve as the main point of contact between the client and the company, translating client goals into actionable plans and coordinating with internal teams to deliver tailored solutions. Regular meetings, status updates, and collaborative planning sessions are common, enabling the Retail Client Manager to address challenges quickly and maintain strong client relationships. This collaborative environment not only benefits clients but also helps the Retail Client Manager develop a broad skill set and deep company knowledge.

Job description

Your Opportunity

At Schwab, youโ€™re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us โ€œchallenge the status quoโ€ and transform the finance industry together.

We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without employer sponsorship.

As part of the Retail Client Experience and Brokerage Products organization, Schwabโ€™s Brokerage Products team helps ensure core brokerage, individual retirement, and small business retirement products meet regulatory requirements, align with industry standards, and support the development and execution of innovative product strategies.

About the Role:

We are seeking a strategic, collaborative Senior Business Product Manager (individual contributor) to help lead day-to-day product management for Schwabโ€™s core brokerage account products, including Schwab One, Organization, Trust, and Estate accounts. This role is responsible for translating business, client, regulatory, and operational needs into clear product priorities; maintaining product health; and partnering across Schwab to deliver enhancements that improve the client and employee experience. The Manager will serve as a product subject matter expert, represent the product line in cross-functional initiatives, and help shape roadmap decisions across Investor Services and Advisor Services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own product management activities for assigned core brokerage account products, including product strategy inputs, product health, documentation, and enhancement prioritization
  • Maintain and improve client-facing and internal product materials, including forms, account applications, account agreements, and Knowledge Center content, in partnership with Legal, Compliance, Operations, Service, Marketing, and Field-facing teams
  • Monitor product performance, client and field feedback, operational pain points, competitive trends, and regulatory developments to identify opportunities to improve product experience
  • Lead product health reviews and competitive gap assessments; synthesize findings into clear recommendations, business cases, and roadmap opportunities
  • With partners and Director, develop and manage product roadmap inputs for Schwab One, Organization, Trust, and Estate accounts, balancing client impact, business value, risk, regulatory requirements, and execution feasibility
  • Represent the product line in cross-functional initiatives, ensuring proposed solutions support the intended client experience, operational model, and business outcomes
  • Proactively identify risks, dependencies, trade-offs, and roadblocks; communicate options and recommendations clearly to leadership and stakeholders
  • Support a One Schwab approach by building strong relationships, influencing without direct authority, and driving alignment across teams with competing priorities
What you have

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in product management, financial services, brokerage, wealth management, or a related business role
  • Strong understanding of product management fundamentals, including product lifecycle management, roadmap development, prioritization, business case development, and stakeholder alignment
  • Demonstrated ability to work across Legal, Compliance, Operations, Risk, Technology, Marketing, Service, and Field-facing teams to drive business outcomes
  • Effective at building partner relationships and influencing for outcomes
  • Strong analytical judgment, with the ability to use data, client feedback, operational insights, competitive research, and risk considerations to frame options and recommendations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex topics for varied audiences and communicate effectively with senior leaders
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to balance strategic thinking with handsโ€‘on execution
  • Ability to influence outcomes without direct authority, navigate ambiguity, and resolve issues through structured decisionโ€‘making and partnership
  • Experience working with regulated products, control environments, or complianceโ€‘driven change
  • Knowledge of brokerage account products, including individual, organization, trust, estate, or other complex account types

Preferred Skills:

  • Understanding of Schwabโ€™s core brokerage product offerings, operating model, and client/field service environment

In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities.
