What is a retail banking executive?

Retail Banking Executives are professionals who manage and oversee banking operations related to individual customers, including personal accounts, loans, and other financial products. They are responsible for developing customer relationships, ensuring excellent service, and meeting sales targets for retail banking products. Retail Banking Executives often supervise branch staff, implement bank policies, and work to grow the customer base. Their role is crucial in maintaining the bank’s reputation and profitability at the branch or regional level.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retail banking executive?

To thrive as a Retail Banking Executive, you need a solid understanding of banking operations, financial products, and regulatory compliance, usually supported by a degree in finance or business. Familiarity with core banking systems, CRM software, and relevant certifications like Certified Retail Banker (CRB) is highly beneficial. Outstanding interpersonal skills, sales acumen, and problem-solving abilities help build strong client relationships and drive business growth. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering excellent customer service, ensuring regulatory adherence, and achieving organizational targets in a competitive environment.

What opportunities for advancement are available to retail banking executives within a typical banking organization?

Retail Banking Executives often have clear pathways for career growth within banking institutions. With demonstrated performance and leadership abilities, they can progress to branch manager, regional manager, or specialized roles such as product management or business development. Many banks support ongoing training and mentorship, which helps executives build the skills needed for higher-level positions. Advancement may also involve taking on more complex portfolios or responsibilities, such as leading larger teams or multiple branches.

At KPMG in Canada, our people bring their unique perspectives to Canada’s most important challenges. Here, you can build momentum that reaches beyond our business, develop skills for the future, and take ownership of your career with support at every stage. Join a firm where your career can make a difference.

KPMG's Banking & Capital Markets Management Consulting practice helps banks, credit unions, payment providers and fintechs design and implement business and technology change. We work across commercial and retail banking, payments and digital banking operations, from strategy and target-state design through requirements, process redesign, integration, testing, implementation, operational readiness and adoption.

As a Manager, you will lead banking transformation and technology implementation engagements, working with client executives to solve complex operating and system challenges. You will shape target-state solutions, direct multidisciplinary delivery teams and ensure that business objectives are translated into executable technology and operating model change.

What you will do
  • Lead client engagements across banking operating model transformation, platform modernization, systems implementation and digital enablement.
  • Advise business and technology leaders on target-state capabilities, operating models, platform strategy, solution options, delivery roadmaps and implementation priorities.
  • Direct delivery across requirements, process design, functional design, integration, data migration, testing, cutover and operational readiness.
  • Lead vendor/platform assessments, implementation planning and solution governance for complex banking ecosystems.
  • Manage engagement scope, plan, team, risks, dependencies, quality, resources and economics, while maintaining transparent executive-level status and escalation.
  • Build trusted relationships with senior client stakeholders and act as the bridge between business, operations, architecture, engineering, data, risk and vendor teams.
  • Coach team members, provide technical and analytical guidance and ensure the quality of client deliverables.
  • Identify business-development opportunities, support or lead proposals and contribute to the development of KPMG banking solutions, methods and market content.

What you bring to the role
  • 6+ years of relevant experience, including a successful track record leading banking technology, systems implementation or management consulting engagements.
  • Banking industry experience within commercial/retail banking, credit/lending, digital banking operations, payments or related banking functions.
  • Demonstrated business and technology expertise across end-to-end banking lifecycles and operating models.
  • Successful track record leading complex management or technology consulting engagements across the solution delivery lifecycle.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing relationships with client executives and influencing cross-functional decisions.
  • Strong technology expertise in banking systems and practical understanding of systems integration, application architecture, data flows, testing, migration and implementation.
  • Experience leading teams and managing workplans, budgets, risks and delivery in complex, matrixed environments.
  • Excellent structured problem solving, executive communication, facilitation and client-service skills.

Nice to have

  • Deep experience with one or more core banking, commercial lending, digital banking, CRM/workflow, deposits, treasury or risk platforms.
  • Experience with platforms such as nCino, Loan IQ, AFS, ACBS, Oracle FLEXCUBE, Temenos, Finastra, FIS, Fiserv, Salesforce or ServiceNow.
  • Knowledge of APIs, cloud, microservices, data architecture, cybersecurity, identity/access management and modern integration patterns.
  • Experience with RFPs, vendor due diligence, package selection, platform replacement or large multi-vendor transformation programs.
  • Relevant project-management, agile, architecture, cloud, data or banking-system certification; French-English bilingual capability is an asset for client delivery in Quebec.
