JOB DESCRIPTION
The City of San Luis Obispo is seeking flexible, community-minded individuals to join our team as Parks Maintenance Aide I-II (Downtown/Farmer's Market Restroom Support) within the Public Works Branch of the Public Works and Utilities Department.
This role supports the weekly Thursday Farmer's Market by transporting, setting up, cleaning, and maintaining portable restroom trailers for public use. Responsibilities include towing and positioning restroom units; managing sewage disposal in accordance with City guidelines; cleaning and disinfecting each unit; restocking supplies; completing required inspections and paperwork; and notifying management of any needed repairs.
This is a part-time, temporary position, not to exceed 1,000 hours per year, with no benefits, and averages approximately 10 hours per week.

JOB SUMMARY:
This classification supports multiple departments within the City of San Luis Obispo. Duties are defined by the classification level and the department to which the employee is assigned. This is a part-time, temporary position and hours will vary.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform routine grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing, trimming, raking, and litter removal to keep parks and facilities clean and safe.
  • Assist with basic repair and upkeep of park structures, equipment, and landscaping features under general supervision.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of hand tools and light equipment while following established safety practices and procedures.

Incumbents assigned to the Downtown/Farmer's Market Restroom Support function within the Public Works Branch of the Public Works and Utilities Department will be required to perform the following duties:
  • Transport, deliver, and position restroom trailers at designated locations.
  • Set up and break down restroom trailers, including leveling, inspecting, and securing the unit.
  • Empty, clean and sanitize restroom trailers, including toilets, sinks, floors, mirrors, and high-touch surfaces.
  • Restock supplies such as toilet paper, paper towels, soap, hand sanitizer, and other amenities.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, damage, or repair needs to supervisors or maintenance staff.
  • Inspect trailers for cleanliness, safety, and proper operation before, during, and after use.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
  • The safe operation of small power tools such as a drill/driver, trailer jacks and wheel chocks.
  • Basic janitorial duties such as cleaning toilets, disinfecting surfaces, and restocking supplies.
  • Safety procedures used in public works maintenance projects.

Ability to:
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions in an independent manner.
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform required duties safely and effectively, including performing physical labor outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Interact with members of the public in a polite and respectful manner and understand who to direct questions to.
  • Work evenings and weekends.
  • Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and strong attention to detail in completing assigned tasks.
  • Lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED is preferred.
One year of custodial experience is highly desirable.
POSSESSION AND MAINTENANCE OF:
A valid California class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
