Restaurant Data Analytics information

What is restaurant data analytics?

Restaurant data analytics refers to the process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data generated by restaurant operations to make informed business decisions. This can include data from point-of-sale systems, inventory, customer feedback, and sales trends. By leveraging analytics, restaurants can optimize menu offerings, improve customer service, reduce waste, and increase profitability. Data analytics plays a crucial role in understanding customer behavior and enhancing overall restaurant performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in restaurant data analytics, and why are they important?

To thrive in Restaurant Data Analytics, you need strong analytical skills, a background in statistics or business, and experience with data analysis, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with tools such as Excel, SQL, Tableau, and restaurant POS analytics platforms is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and attention to detail help analysts translate complex data into actionable insights for restaurant management. These skills are crucial for optimizing operations, driving profitability, and informing strategic decisions in a competitive hospitality environment.

What are the main challenges faced by professionals in restaurant data analytics, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Restaurant Data Analytics often face challenges such as integrating data from multiple sources (POS systems, reservations, customer feedback), ensuring data accuracy, and communicating actionable insights to non-technical team members. Addressing these challenges typically involves building robust data pipelines, collaborating closely with IT and restaurant managers, and developing clear visualizations or dashboards that translate complex data into practical recommendations. Continuous learning and staying updated with the latest analytics tools also help professionals remain effective in this dynamic environment.

ABOUT US

Rethink Food is a chef-led nonprofit partnering with restaurants to better feed communities.
Through strong partnerships with local restaurants and community-based organizations, we work with a responsive, hyperlocal network that provides culturally celebrated, nutritious meals. Since 2017, we've served over 34 million meals
and reinvested more than $157 million
into local economies.

Our work falls into three core areas:

  • Building the Network: We connect restaurants, community-based organizations, and food donors to deliver meals where they’re needed most.
  • Setting the Example: Through our Sustainable Community Kitchen, we demonstrate what dignified, community-centered food access can look like.
  • Advocating for Change: We champion policy and systems change to create a more sustainable, equitable food future for all.

ROLE SUMMARY:

The Director of Finance and Data Analysis is a leadership role and the CFO's primary thought partner in a lean, three-person Finance team. This role leads financial planning and analysis (FP&A), owns reporting infrastructure, and holds end-to-end accountability for revenue cycle management across all client and funder contracts, with the Medically Tailored Meals (MTM) program as a particularly complex and critical piece of that portfolio.

Because the team is small, this role also serves as a working technical accounting resource: reviewing the Staff Accountant's day-to-day work as a second set of eyes ahead of CFO review, and stepping in on close, reconciliation, or compliance questions that require deeper accounting judgment. This role is also a key driver of Rethink's technology and AI strategy within Finance,  identifying and implementing tools that streamline day-to-day operations and deepen the organization's analytical capabilities.

In our agile environment, your role extends beyond core duties — it's an invitation to amplify your influence. You'll be expected to proactively leverage your diverse talents, contributing across a variety of initiatives to directly achieve our shared objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Planning & Analysis

  • Lead the organization's financial planning and analysis function, including annual budgeting, forecasting, and multi-year financial modeling.
  • Build and maintain dynamic financial models for programs, contracts, and initiatives to support leadership decision-making.
  • Analyze the financial viability of RFPs and prepare cost structures for contract bids.
  • Identify opportunities for programmatic cost savings and budget optimization across the organization.
  • Partner with program and department leads to develop and manage program-level budgets and cost allocation.

Reporting & Data Analysis

  • Own and continuously improve the organization's financial reporting infrastructure — ensuring all departments have timely, accurate data for decision-making.
  • Generate reports and create materials to support operational business plans, strategic initiatives, and board-level financial review.
  • Build and maintain dashboards and reporting tools (including Tableau or equivalent) that surface actionable insights across finance and programs.
  • Support the streamlining and management of organizational data, in collaboration with the Data and Technology team.
  • Research and represent thought leadership on best practices in financial data and analytics.

Revenue Cycle Management

  • Own the end-to-end revenue cycle for all client, funder, and contract billing — from charge capture and invoicing through collections, cash application, and reconciliation.
  • Hold strategic and operational oversight of the Medically Tailored Meals (MTM) billing stream as the most complex and compliance-intensive component of the revenue cycle, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to contract and payer requirements.
  •  Maintain functional accountability for reconciliation between billing systems and program data across all revenue streams, including billing cycles and funder-specific reporting.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to streamline invoicing and collections workflows and reduce administrative burden.
  • Support programmatic buildout and invoicing for new and existing government and institutional contracts.

Accounting Oversight & Second-Level Review

  • Serve as the primary reviewer of the Staff Accountant's day-to-day work — journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end close deliverables — acting as a second set of eyes ahead of CFO review.
  • Provide backup coverage and escalation support for core accounting functions during the Staff Accountant's absence or workload peaks.
  • Partner with the CFO on audit readiness, ensuring reviewed work supports clean, well-documented year-end audit and grant/funder diligence.

AI & Technology Integration

  • Lead Finance's adoption of AI tools and emerging technologies to automate routine tasks, reduce manual workflows, and improve the speed and quality of financial analysis.
  • Evaluate and implement financial systems, reporting tools, and integrations — including with the Rethink App and partner platforms.
  • Serve as a thought leader and internal champion for AI and technology use within Finance, collaborating closely with the Data and Technology team.
  • Document and scale new technology-enabled processes through clear SOPs and change management.

Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Report directly to the CFO and serve as a key member of the Finance leadership team.
  • Maintain functional accountability for compliance and internal control efficiencies.
  • Work cross-functionally across the organization to communicate new policies, financial processes, and procedures.
  • Lead and mentor Finance team members supporting reporting, FP&A, and data functions.
  • Attend and present updates at regular departmental and leadership meetings.
  • Support cross-functional projects and contribute to organizational strategic planning.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and professional experience; advanced degree (MBA, MPA) or CPA preferred.
  • Minimum 6–8 years of progressive experience in financial planning and analysis, accounting, financial reporting, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including managing staff, projects, or functional areas.
  • Proven expertise in FP&A, financial modeling, and budget management; experience supporting government or institutional contracts strongly preferred.
  • High systems aptitude; proficiency in GSuite and MS Office required. Experience in Tableau, financial reporting platforms, and ERP systems preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leveraging AI tools and emerging technologies to streamline financial workflows and analysis.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate complex financial data into clear, actionable insights for non-finance audiences.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and meet demanding deadlines.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills — comfortable presenting to senior leadership and working across teams.
  • Collaborative, solutions-oriented approach to navigating challenges and driving change.
  • Self-motivated and proactive, with a demonstrated ability to take initiative and continuously improve.
  • Flexible and adaptive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
  • Must embrace the mission and core values of Rethink Food.
