General Summary:
Under general supervision the Respiratory Therapist will perform all respiratory care related duties. Sets up and administers all routine and complex respiratory therapy procedures to patients of all ages in all areas of the hospital, as prescribed by a physician. Responsible for the application and operation of acute care ventilators used for continuous short and long-term mechanical ventilation of adults, pediatrics and neonates. Maintains all department and hospital records and enters accurate information into the hospital computer for the therapy as given.
Responsibilities:
1. After thorough review of patient's chart to verify proper prescription provided by physician, accurately administers and performs, monitors, and educates patients in all modalities of respiratory care and protocols. Includes managing artificial airways, non-invasive ventilation (Cpap/Bipap), and other life support equipment.
2. Utilizes effective time management by prioritizing and triaging care per departmental policy and accommodating unforeseen circumstances while maintaining a high standard of quality, service, and professionalism.
3. Makes recommendations for therapy on the assessment form and in the patient's chart. Documents all procedures accurately and timely.
4. Actively and effectively communicates with Physicians and Nursing to recommend appropriate modes of ventilation in critical care areas.
5. Demonstrates ability to assess, monitor, and recommend appropriate therapies for newborns when working in the NICU; includes assisting in surfactant administration, intubations, and extubations (Kent Campus). Assists with and demonstrates ability to assess, monitor, and resuscitate newborns during C-Sections (Sussex Campus).
6. Responds to Rapid Responses and codes in an urgent manner; performs CPR, intubations (Kent Campus), airway management, monitors cardiopulmonary status and assists transportation of patients within and outside of the organization.
7. Must be able to work in all areas of Respiratory care, have thorough knowledge of and be able to troubleshoot all equipment utilized in the Respiratory care department
8. Follows all regulatory procedures in regards to cleaning equipment and respiratory environment; documents all safety issues on Safety Variance report; performs all quality control and maintenance procedures with accurate documentation.
9. Ensures all procedures are documented in a timely and accurate manner, with minimal errors. Documents all necessary information in patient records. Verifies all orders prior to performing therapy.
10. Obtains and analyzes all blood gas samples per policy. Performs all required quality control, proficiency testing, and maintenance procedures per policy, with complete and accurate documentation.
11. All other duties as assigned, within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
