The Mannik & Smith Group, Inc. Our talented staff of more than 650+ professionals deliver integrated planning, design, engineering and construction solutions.
Due to MSG's continued growth, a new opening is available for a Civil Group Manager to assist with our projects in Cranberry PA!
Position Summary
The Civil Group Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, operational performance, technical excellence, business development, and staff development of MSG's Civil Engineering Group. This role serves as both a strategic leader and technical expert, ensuring the successful delivery of site-civil and land development projects while developing a high-performing team capable of meeting the company's growth objectives.
The Civil Group Manager leads through MSG's seller-doer model by maintaining strong client relationships, supporting business development efforts, overseeing project delivery, and mentoring future leaders. This individual serves as a Project Manager on key projects while providing leadership and accountability for the performance, utilization, and development of the civil engineering team.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership & Project Delivery
  • Lead and oversee the successful execution of civil engineering and land development projects.
  • Monitor project health, profitability, schedules, budgets, and client satisfaction.
  • Identify project risks and operational challenges and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and staffing plans.
  • Review and approve engineering plans, specifications, reports, and construction documents.
  • Ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, profitably, and in compliance with company standards.
  • Coach and support Project Managers to improve project execution and financial performance.
  • Maintain direct involvement in key projects to ensure successful delivery and technical excellence.
Technical Leadership
  • Provide technical expertise in the planning and design of site-civil and land development projects, including: 
  1. Site layout and design
  2. Grading and drainage
  3. Utility infrastructure
  4. Roadway design
  5. Stormwater management
  6. Erosion and sediment control
  7. Permitting and entitlement processes
  • Lead quality assurance and quality control initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, design standards, and engineering best practices.
  • Promote innovation, continuous improvement, and technical excellence throughout the group.
  • Identify technical capability gaps and implement training, technology, or process improvements.

Resource & Financial Management
  • Manage group workload, staffing, and utilization to support current and future project demands.
  • Balance resources across projects and team members to maximize operational efficiency.
  • Partner with leadership to forecast workload and staffing needs.
  • Identify hiring needs and support recruitment efforts.
  • Monitor project budgets, profitability, and financial performance metrics.
  • Drive overall group utilization, efficiency, and profitability.

Client Development & Business Growth
  • Maintain and strengthen relationships with existing and prospective clients.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients and stakeholders.
  • Support business development initiatives through networking, proposal preparation, interviews, presentations, and client meetings.
  • Identify opportunities for growth within existing accounts and emerging markets.
  • Collaborate with Market Leaders, Service Line Leaders, and Business Unit Leaders to support strategic growth objectives.
  • Contribute to annual sales and revenue goals through active seller-doer engagement.

People Leadership & Talent Development
  • Lead, mentor, and develop engineers, project managers, designers, and technical staff.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide coaching, performance feedback, and career development support.
  • Participate in employee evaluations, succession planning, and leadership development initiatives.
  • Identify and develop future leaders within the group.
  • Support recruiting, onboarding, employee engagement, and retention efforts.

Organizational Leadership
  • Collaborate with leaders across offices, service lines, and business units to achieve company goals.
  • Support MSG's strategic initiatives and operational objectives.
  • Promote effective communication, teamwork, and resource sharing across the organization.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, and leadership consistent with MSG's values and culture.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in civil engineering, site development, land development, and permitting.
  • Demonstrated experience managing engineering projects, budgets, schedules, and client relationships.
  • Prior experience leading, mentoring, and developing technical teams.
  • Strong understanding of land development design, permitting processes, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Strong business development, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced consulting environment.

Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and geographic location.
