What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Residential Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Residential Architect, you need a solid background in architectural design, drafting, and building codes, typically backed by a degree in architecture and architectural licensure. Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, as well as knowledge of local zoning regulations, is essential. Creativity, strong communication skills, and attention to detail help architects effectively translate client needs into functional, aesthetic homes. These skills ensure that projects are innovative, compliant, and precisely tailored to client expectations, leading to successful and sustainable residential designs.

How does a residential architect typically collaborate with clients and other professionals during the design and construction process?

Residential architects work closely with clients to understand their vision, needs, and budget, often holding several meetings to refine design concepts and ensure alignment. Throughout the project, they coordinate with engineers, contractors, and interior designers, facilitating clear communication to address technical requirements and resolve challenges as they arise. Architects also oversee site visits and review construction progress to ensure the final build matches the approved plans, making adjustments when necessary. This collaborative approach is essential for delivering a successful, client-centered home design.

Are residential architects in demand?

Residential architects are in steady demand as homeowners seek custom design and renovation projects. The profession benefits from growth in the housing market, and architects with strong design skills and knowledge of building codes are often preferred by clients and firms.

What does a residential architect do?

A residential architect designs and plans private homes, working with clients to create functional and aesthetically pleasing living spaces. They develop detailed drawings, select materials, and coordinate with contractors to ensure the project meets building codes and client needs. The role often requires knowledge of design software and obtaining necessary licenses or certifications.

Permanent

Expected Salary Range: $90,000-$110,000

Job Description

Step into a key design and technical leadership role where your expertise helps shape high-density, mixed-use, multifamily, urban infill, and student housing projects across growing markets. As a Project Architect in Atlanta, you will join a collaborative architecture and interiors team known for producing thoughtful concepts, clean documentation, and purposeful spaces that balance creativity with buildable precision.

This opportunity is ideal for a technically strong architect who enjoys solving complex design challenges, mentoring team members, and staying closely involved through all phases of project development. You will work alongside project managers, construction administrators, designers, and consultants to bring large-scale residential and mixed-use projects from concept through completion.

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Competitive expected salary range of $90,000-$110,000, based on experience and qualifications.
  • Work on meaningful multifamily, mixed-use, retail, urban infill, and student housing projects that shape communities.
  • Join an award-winning workplace culture built around collaboration, accuracy, humor, and low-ego teamwork.
  • Contribute to projects for leading developers, including major real estate investment organizations.
  • Be part of a design environment that values both big-picture thinking and technical excellence.
  • Grow your leadership skills by mentoring supporting staff and helping guide strong project teams.
  • Enjoy a role where creativity, documentation quality, and practical problem-solving all matter.

What You’ll Do as the Project Architect

  • Work closely with the Project Manager and Construction Administrator as part of a dynamic project team.
  • Serve as a key contributor within the overall design documentation process.
  • Lead and support the preparation of design projects through all phases of development.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to creatively solve design, technical, and coordination challenges.
  • Translate high-level design concepts into accurate, coordinated, and buildable documentation.
  • Mentor and guide supporting staff while promoting strong technical standards.
  • Use both digital tools and hands-on design thinking, including sketching, trace, and iterative problem solving.
  • Support projects that may span multiple regions, with travel estimated at approximately 10%-15%.

About You as the Project Architect

  • 5-8 years of architectural design experience, with licensure preferred but not required.
  • Professional degree in architecture from an accredited college or university.
  • Strong technical knowledge and a clear understanding of how buildings are assembled.
  • Experience with multifamily, mixed-use, or student housing construction.
  • Proficiency with Revit, Bluebeam, and similar design and documentation applications.
  • Strong organizational skills, follow-through, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent analytical, coordination, and problem-solving abilities.
  • A positive attitude, collaborative mindset, and sense of humor.
  • Strong mentorship skills and the ability to support developing team members.
  • Authorization to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available for this role at this time.

Why Build Your Career in Atlanta

Atlanta offers a strong platform for architects who want to work on high-impact residential and mixed-use developments in a growing urban market. With continued demand for housing, urban infill, and community-focused design, this role gives you the opportunity to contribute to projects that are both technically engaging and highly visible.

If you are a Project Architect who thrives in a collaborative studio environment, values clean documentation, and wants to work on complex projects in Atlanta, this position offers the chance to do meaningful work with a team that takes design seriously without taking itself too seriously.
