What is a residency?

A residency is a period of advanced medical training that follows graduation from medical school. During residency, doctors work in hospitals or clinics under the supervision of experienced physicians, gaining hands-on experience in a specialty such as internal medicine, surgery, or pediatrics. This training typically lasts between three and seven years, depending on the specialty. Completion of a residency is required to become a fully licensed and board-certified physician in the United States.

What are common challenges faced during a residency, and how can residents manage them?

Medical residency can be demanding, with long hours, high patient loads, and steep learning curves. Residents often face challenges such as managing time efficiently, coping with fatigue, and balancing clinical duties with ongoing education. Effective strategies include prioritizing tasks, seeking support from peers and mentors, and utilizing available wellness resources. Open communication with supervisors and regular self-care are also crucial for maintaining well-being throughout residency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a residency, and why are they important?

To thrive in a medical residency, you need a solid medical education (MD or DO degree), clinical skills, and successful completion of USMLE or COMLEX exams. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and experience using diagnostic and procedural equipment are also essential. Excellent communication, teamwork, resilience, and time management skills help residents excel in high-pressure environments. These competencies are crucial for delivering quality patient care, adapting to demanding schedules, and progressing toward independent medical practice.

Residencies are more advanced, credentialed, and focused on specialization, whereas internships are foundational learning roles.

Is it easy to find jobs after residency?

Finding a job after residency is generally feasible for medical professionals, as many hospitals and clinics actively recruit residents completing their training. Success depends on factors such as specialty demand, geographic location, and the candidate's credentials, certifications, and networking efforts. Residents often use their clinical experience, board certifications, and professional connections to secure employment opportunities.

The responsibilities of the Associate Program Director will include:

  • Ownership of all elements of PGY-specific requirements, including clinical rotation coordination, resident evaluation and assessment, and mentorship in academic and professional development

All faculty ultimately report to the Director of Service for Emergency Medicine at Denver Health, contributing to the mission of patient care, educational, research, and professional development, and have meaningful responsibilities and faculty appointments in the University of Colorado School of Medicineโ€™s academic Department of Emergency Medicine. As an institution, Denver Health is a nationally recognized integrated health care system which includes: a large safety-net acute-care hospital, an acclaimed Level 1 trauma center (Ernest E Moore MD Shock Trauma Center), a large network of community health centers, the city and county public health department (Denver Public Health), the sole city-wide advanced life support EMS agency (Denver Paramedics) and a regional poison center (Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center). Denver Health is a profoundly mission-driven organization that has provided more than $3.3 billion in care for the uninsured in the last ten years. Denver Health is a leader in performance and quality improvement and remains financially secure, in part, due to its nationally recognized implementation of lean principles in healthcare.

Denver Health and the Department of Emergency Medicine are profoundly committed to diversity in our workforce. As medical providers, we are passionate about serving our diverse patient population and providing them with the best care. To achieve this, we dedicate significant resources as a team to incorporate cultural humility, equity, and inclusion into every aspect of our work. This position will be a key member of our department and is expected to take an active role in our commitment to creating an environment for patients and staff where richness of ideas, backgrounds, and perspectives are embraced. Our department is committed to finding innovative ways to meet the needs of our patients, and each other as coworkers โ€“ we strive to do so with respect, kindness, and open minds.
