Residency Program Manager information

What is a residency program manager?

Residency Program Managers are administrative professionals responsible for overseeing the daily operations and accreditation requirements of medical residency programs. They coordinate schedules, ensure compliance with accreditation standards, manage communication between residents and faculty, and support the overall educational mission of the residency. Their role is essential in maintaining the quality and organization of graduate medical education programs.

What does a residency program manager do?

A Residency Program Manager plays a vital role in supporting both residents and faculty by coordinating schedules, managing accreditation requirements, and serving as a key communication point. They handle onboarding, track evaluations, and assist with resolving day-to-day issues that arise. Program Managers also collaborate closely with faculty to ensure curriculum compliance and help residents navigate challenges, creating a supportive and efficient training environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a residency program manager?

To thrive as a Residency Program Manager, you need expertise in graduate medical education, program administration, and compliance with accreditation standards, typically supported by a bachelor's degree or higher. Familiarity with ACGME accreditation systems, residency management software, and institutional databases is essential. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills help you coordinate stakeholders and address resident and faculty needs effectively. These skills ensure the residency program runs smoothly, remains accredited, and supports the professional development of medical trainees.

Job description

Introduction to the Role and Practice:

Centra is looking for board-certified (or board eligible) emergency physicians to staff one of our 4 ERs in the central Virginia region:  Lynchburg General Hospital, Bedford Memorial Hospital, Gretna Medical Center, and Southside Community Hospital.

You Can Expect:

  • Collegial, employed group with physician-heavy staffing model. All physicians in the group have an equitable standing from day one: no seniority for scheduling requests or opaque pay structures. Well-supported, months-long orientation period with limited nights and no solo site coverage.
  • Active nocturnist program, which decreases the night load for everyone. Nocturnists get to make their own schedule. Option to sign on for days/evenings only (no night shifts ever). No scheduled call. Variety of work settings, from busy cross-covered community trauma center to single-coverage free-standing ER.
  • Guaranteed requests off work up to 10 days per month. Alternate between working Christmas and Thanksgiving. You are guaranteed 3 days off surrounding your "off holiday".
  • Low cost of living (17% below national average), mild climate, and located near abundant outdoor, recreational, cultural and educational opportunities.
  • First EmPath Unit on the east coast. This is a behavioral health care space that will be staffed and managed by the behavioral health service.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive compensation
  • Sign-on bonus
  • Up to $120k in student loan repayment
  • Up to $15,000 in relocation assistance
  • Up to $7,500 CME allowance
  • 403(b) and 457(b) tax deferred savings plan; Immediate vested employer contribution match at 3%
  • Health, dental, vision, and supplemental insurance options, short- and long-term disability
  • Malpractice coverage with tail

Travel elsewhere is easy with the Amtrak train station located in downtown Lynchburg or the Lynchburg regional airport. The city also features top-tier arts at the Academy Center and minor league baseball with the Lynchburg Hillcats. Nearby, scenic Smith Mountain Lake offers even more recreation.

Centra Medical Group (CMG) is a comprehensive network of nearly 600 employed providers within Centra Health. Centra Health services a population of 600,000 community members with 70 different outpatient and specialty practices. Centra offers primary care and specialty services across Central and Southern Virginia-from Lynchburg to Danville, Farmville, Moneta, and Bedford. • Completion of medical degree and residency/fellowship training in emergency medicine
  • MD/DO with certification by an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) board in physician's primary specialty. Must be board certified or in the process of certifying.
