What is a residence assistant?

Residence Assistants (RAs) are student leaders who live in university or college residence halls and serve as a resource for students living on campus. They help foster a positive and inclusive community, provide support and guidance to residents, and enforce residence policies. RAs also organize events and programs, mediate conflicts, and act as a liaison between residents and university administration. Their role is crucial in promoting student well-being and creating a safe, welcoming environment in campus housing.

What are some common challenges residence assistants face when supporting residents, and how can they effectively address them?

Residence Assistants often encounter challenges such as mediating roommate conflicts, managing time between academic and job responsibilities, and responding to emergencies or crises. Effectively addressing these challenges requires strong communication skills, empathy, and a solid understanding of campus resources. Regular training, proactive engagement with residents, and collaborating with other staff members help RAs create a supportive and safe living environment while also maintaining their own well-being.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a residence assistant, and why are they important?

Exceptional communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills help Residence Assistants build community and support diverse student needs. These skills are crucial for fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive living environment while effectively managing emergencies and student concerns.

Job description

Description

Oaknoll has an exciting new opportunity for a Lead Receptionist at our East Campus. Interested applicants should apply no later than Wednesday, September 2nd.

As Lead Receptionist, you'll be responsible for more than simply supervising our East Campus receptionists; you'll be ensuring a standard of resident-centered service and communication that allows us to CREATE home for our residents. Oaknoll is a not-for-profit community that provides resident-centered care and services through our CREATE culture.

CREATE is an acronym for our values: caring, respect, enthusiasm, awareness, teamwork, and encouragement. We believe that people should experience joyful, active, and connected lives as they age. We believe people should have the opportunity to receive competent, caring, and compassionate health care when they need it. We believe our community is both special and unique because of the people who live here, the people who work here, and the relationships that they build together. We strive to make the lives of our residents and our staff meaningful and fulfilling. If you want to share in these values and the relationships that they allow us to build, we are looking for YOU!

The Lead Receptionist at East Campus is a full-time, 32-hours/week position, with the schedule being 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through Thursday. In addition to regular receptionist duties, such as taking and routing calls, greeting residents and visitors, and managing incoming and outgoing mail, they coordinate, manage, and assist all reception efforts at the Oaknoll East Campus, ensuring our reception team has all the resources they need to provide excellent service. They are also responsible for training new receptionists, addressing receptionist performance, maintaining the reception schedule, and covering reception hours at the East Campus as needed. Additionally, they keep an accurate census of residents, direct and train staff for emergency situations, stay current on event schedules and programming as relevant to our community, and manage reservations of transportation services, guest rooms, meeting and lounge spaces, and the like.

Why choose Oaknoll? Not only are we a community focused not-for-profit, but we offer a wide range of employee benefits including: competitive pay, paid time off, retirement plan with company contributions, 40% off employee meals, free use of our gyms and pool, weekly access to a Nurse Practitioner free of charge, onsite parking, tuition reimbursement, scholarship program, and student loan repayment assistance, along with medical, dental, vision, life, FSAs, and voluntary short-term and long-term disability insurances for eligible employees.

Come check us out and learn why Oaknoll is right for you!
