What does a research project manager do?

A Research Project Manager oversees the planning, execution, and completion of research projects within organizations such as universities, nonprofits, or private companies. Their responsibilities include coordinating teams, managing budgets and timelines, ensuring compliance with regulations, and communicating progress to stakeholders. They act as a bridge between researchers, administrative staff, and sometimes external partners, ensuring that project goals are met efficiently and effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a research project manager?

To thrive as a Research Project Manager, you need expertise in project management, budgeting, and research methodologies, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in managing research teams or studies. Familiarity with project management software (like Asana or MS Project), data analysis tools (such as SPSS or R), and compliance certifications (like GCP) is typically required. Excellent organization, leadership, and communication skills help coordinate diverse teams and stakeholders effectively. These skills ensure that complex research projects are completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with regulatory and scientific standards.

Job Description
Job Description:
Manages medium size projects pertaining to Microsoft Retail Stores Voice of the Customer quantitative and qualitative primary research. This position requires interaction with internal stakeholders including customer facing teams and internal development and implementation teams as well as external vendor partners with specific subject matter expertise. The candidate is responsible for supporting 3rd party vendor relationships to ensure that Microsoft project business requirements are met.
Candidate Requirements:
Project Management Experience (3-5 years)
Marketing background - passion for marketing and ideally someone who has worked with surveys, although the survey part is not a hard-requirement (3-5 years)
Analytical Skills - Excel Skills including vlookup and Pivot Tables
Years: The ideal candidate will have a marketing and/or research related background. We are targeting 3-5 years of experience in this field.
Degrees: BA in Marketing or Economics
Not looking for someone with a lot of analytical skills. They need to be able to represent the output of the analysis and understand a coherent business question and translate that conversationally into the projects they are managing. Really not looking for a super heavy-handed PM, but we do need good, smart, thoughtful PMing.
Disqualifier: We don't want someone who has their template for how to PM. We are targeting the 3-5 years of PM/Marketing experience because we don't want the template. We do need structure, but the candidate that's a good fit for this role is organized and able to bring a different view-point, making improvements to the current workflow as needed.
Key Performance: Is this person able to represent a clear view of how the resources are deployed? Are they able to expand our planning horizon (would like to get to 3-months out)?
Best v. Average: We need someone who can manage this on their own. We need someone who is good with the data and understands the risks within the uncertainty. Ideally some MSFT exposure, but this isn't required. The perfect candidate has experience PMing in a Marketing environment, ideally with surveys.
