Research Assistant Engineer information

What is a research assistant engineer?

Research Assistant Engineers are professionals who support research projects by applying engineering principles and technical skills. They assist in designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, maintaining laboratory equipment, and preparing technical reports. Their role bridges the gap between engineering and research, often collaborating closely with scientists and lead engineers. Research Assistant Engineers are commonly found in academic, industrial, or government research settings, contributing to the development and innovation of new technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a research assistant engineer?

To excel as a Research Assistant Engineer, a strong background in engineering principles, data analysis, and experimental design is typically required, often with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with technical tools such as MATLAB, Python, CAD software, and laboratory instrumentation is essential, along with experience in data collection and analysis. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help candidates stand out when collaborating with research teams and presenting findings. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring accurate research outcomes and supporting innovative engineering solutions.

How does a research assistant engineer typically collaborate with other team members during a research project?

Research Assistant Engineers frequently work in multidisciplinary teams, collaborating closely with lead researchers, fellow engineers, and sometimes external partners. They are often responsible for supporting experimental setup, data collection, and analysis, and may also contribute to technical documentation and presentations. Clear communication and teamwork are essential, as project success often depends on integrating diverse expertise and ensuring research milestones are met efficiently. Regular meetings and progress updates are common, providing opportunities to share findings, address challenges, and align on project goals.

Job description

R&D Electrical Engineer
Description -
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to design next-generation industrial presses based on HP's inkjet technology.
HP PageWide Industrial is a division of HP that develops industrial printing solutions built on HP Scalable PageWide Printing Technology. We have revolutionized the digital web press industry by offering full-color, variable data printing at unprecedented speeds and media widths. You will be an integral part of a fast-paced R&D team responsible for the entire electrical design of these presses, from the power and controls through the PCB components of the digital image pipeline.

This role involves designing electrical power and controls subsystems to meet design, safety, and regulatory requirements, then taking them from prototyping to manufacturing. The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on engineering capability with effective technical leadership and clear communication.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary Electrical Engineer for new press module design projects, partnering with Mechanical Engineers and Industrial Controls Engineers. Make design decisions, recommend and specify component selection, and create bills of materials.
  • Participate in design reviews, sharing key decisions, challenges, and learnings.
  • Create comprehensive schematic and assembly design drawings in AutoCAD and related documentation to enable manufacturing and troubleshooting of electrical cabinets, custom cables, and related subassemblies.
  • Release and manage design drawings and documentation.
  • Drive prototyping of designs, perform validation testing, and make changes based on learnings. Design and perform tests to qualify and characterize key components, both off-the-shelf and internally-designed.
  • Design and lead the assembly of functional test equipment to assist our manufacturers in validating press modules.
  • Address component end-of-life and assurance-of-supply issues by selecting and qualifying alternate components, and following change management processes to implement design changes.
  • Provide R&D support for manufacturing and field issues.
  • Develop deep expertise in PWI's image pipeline electronics, signal flow, and overall press architecture.

In addition, the broad responsibilities of our R&D electrical architecture team provide opportunities to develop or apply skills in other areas such as PCB design and diagnostics code development.
Education & Experience Recommended
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, ECE, or related subject.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience developing industrial machinery or similar designs from concept to production.
  • Demonstrated track record of taking designs from concept through prototyping to manufacturing.

Preferred Certifications
NA
Knowledge & Skills
  • 2D CAD software such as AutoCAD or AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Voltage, current, and power measurements using a DMM and clamp-on current probes.
  • Signal measurements using an oscilloscope.
  • Balanced three-phase power design.

Helpful Additional Experience
  • 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks or Creo Elements.
  • Power measurements and analysis using a power quality meter.
  • Familiarity with Python or other scripting/programming language.
  • Overcurrent protection circuit design and coordination.
  • Industrial controls design and code development, including PLCs (programmable logic controllers) and motor controllers.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 79 (Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery).
  • Familiarity with motors and controllers, including VFDs (variable frequency drives).
  • Machine grounding principles.
  • Familiarity with EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) principles and best practices as they apply to industrial machinery.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on design, lab validation, manufacturing partnership, and real-world system ownership.
