What is research and development (R&D)?

Research and Development (R&D) refers to the activities companies undertake to innovate and introduce new products or services. It involves researching market needs, creating new ideas, and developing prototypes or processes to bring those ideas to life. R&D is crucial for business growth, helping organizations stay competitive by improving existing products or inventing new ones. Professionals in this field often work in laboratories, engineering departments, or product design teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in research and development (R&D)?

A successful R&D professional typically possesses a strong background in scientific or technical disciplines, supported by relevant degrees such as a BS, MS, or PhD in fields like engineering, chemistry, or biology. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, data analysis software, and project management tools, along with certifications like Six Sigma or PMP, is often required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective collaboration are crucial soft skills that help drive innovation and teamwork. These competencies are vital for developing new products, improving processes, and maintaining a competitive edge in fast-evolving markets.

What are typical challenges faced by professionals in research and development (R&D)?

Professionals in R&D roles often encounter challenges such as balancing innovative thinking with practical constraints like budget, timelines, and regulatory requirements. They must also navigate uncertainties related to experimental results and manage cross-functional collaboration with teams such as marketing, production, and quality assurance. Staying updated with the latest technological advancements and maintaining clear documentation throughout the development process are also crucial to success. Adaptability and strong problem-solving skills are essential to overcome these common hurdles and drive projects forward.

What is the difference between Research And Development vs Product Development?

Research And Development focuses on generating new knowledge and innovations, often in labs or research centers. Product Development takes those innovations and transforms them into market-ready products through design, testing, and manufacturing processes. While R&D is about discovery, product development is about application and commercialization.

What degree do you need to work in research and development?

Research and development roles typically require at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as science, engineering, or technology. Advanced positions may require a master's degree or Ph.D., along with strong analytical skills and experience with laboratory tools or research methodologies.

What skills are needed for research and development jobs?

Research and development jobs require strong analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and proficiency in scientific or technical methods. Knowledge of relevant tools, programming languages, or laboratory equipment, along with good communication and teamwork skills, are also important for success in R&D roles.

Job description

About AQR Capital Management
AQR is a global investment firm built at the intersection of financial theory and practical application. We strive to deliver concrete, long-term results by looking past market noise to identify and isolate the factors that matter most, and by developing ideas that stand up to rigorous testing. By putting theory into practice, we have become a leader in alternative strategies and an innovator in traditional portfolio management since 1998.
AQR takes a systematic, research-driven approach, applying quantitative tools to process fundamental information and manage risk. Our clients include institutional investors, such as pension funds, insurance companies, endowments, foundations and sovereign wealth funds, as well as financial advisors.
The Team
AQR's Research Engineering team is seeking a strong technical engineer to strengthen our business initiatives in QRD, focused on our Global Stock Selection group.
The Global Stock Selection (GSS) Quantitative Research Development (QRD) group enables and supports Global Stock Selection Research at AQR. GSS QRD maintains a sophisticated infrastructure and tooling environment in support of the business, as well as a complex production process including orchestrating numerous workflows with large amounts of data. QRD is responsible for signal generation and model construction as well as many other aspects of portfolio construction that go into the running of our strategies. The QRD team works closely with researchers to create new systematic investment strategies and refine existing ones, applying technology expertise along with a practical understanding of markets to implement research ideas and develop systems that further enable the business.
Your Role
As a software engineer at AQR, you will build or extend our:
  • Scalable, AWS-based storage and computing infrastructure
  • Generalized research platform
  • Data ingestion and validation engine
  • Model computation and signal generation pipeline
  • Machine learning / Natural Language Processing pipeline

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • 3-5 years of professional software engineering experience building production software.
  • Strong programming skills in Python; experience with C++ is a plus.
  • Experience developing software on Linux.
  • Experience building cloud-native applications using AWS or similar cloud platforms.
  • Experience working with distributed systems, scalable applications, and large-scale data processing.
  • Proficiency with SQL and experience working with structured data at scale.
  • Hands-on experience building or integrating native AI applications, including practical experience working with large language models (LLMs), AI agents, or AI-assisted workflows.
  • Solid understanding of the strengths, limitations, and practical tradeoffs of LLMs, agentic systems, and modern AI technologies.
  • Ability to take open-ended business or technical problems, work with stakeholders to clarify requirements, and develop practical, well-reasoned technical solutions.
  • Comfortable operating in environments where requirements evolve, exercising sound engineering judgment rather than relying on detailed specifications.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including system design, testing, code quality, and maintainability.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts and work effectively across teams.
  • Experience supporting quantitative research, machine learning platforms, or financial technology applications is a plus.
  • Familiarity with investment research, signal generation, portfolio construction, or trading systems is a plus.
