What is a research and development associate?

Research and Development (R&D) Associates are professionals who support the creation and improvement of products, services, or processes within an organization. They typically conduct experiments, analyze data, and collaborate with scientists, engineers, or product managers to innovate and solve technical challenges. R&D Associates play a vital role in helping companies remain competitive by driving new ideas from concept to reality. Their work often involves staying up-to-date with the latest industry trends and scientific advancements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a research and development associate?

To thrive as a Research and Development Associate, you need a strong background in scientific research, data analysis, and typically a relevant degree such as in chemistry, biology, or engineering. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, statistical software, and research documentation systems is commonly required. Creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications are essential for driving innovation, ensuring accurate results, and effectively collaborating on new product or process development.

What are some common challenges research and development associates face when transitioning from academia to industry roles?

Research and Development Associates often encounter challenges when shifting from academia to industry, such as adapting to faster-paced project timelines, balancing multiple concurrent projects, and focusing on practical, commercially viable solutions rather than purely theoretical research. Job description

The Research Associate will join an active health care delivery research program (led by Dr. Maggie Paul Bio) embedded within Mayo Clinic, one of the largest and most integrated academic health systems in the country. This is a transitional training role designed for early-career researchers pursuing independent academic careers in health services research, implementation science, or health policy.

What makes this position distinctive is the combination of rigorous research training with direct access to health system infrastructure. The Research Associate will partner with clinicians and operational leaders across Mayo Clinic to design and conduct evaluations of real-world innovations in care delivery and clinical practice, including digital health tools, new care delivery models, and physician workforce and leadership initiatives. The role sits within a team with a large portfolio of active projects and offers both structured mentorship and the autonomy to develop an independent line of scholarship.

Candidates with experience conducting research within learning health systems or health care delivery organizations are particularly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mixed-methods evaluations of health system innovations, with the flexibility to design studies that leverage the candidate's methodological strengths, whether qualitative (e.g., interviews, focus groups), quantitative (e.g., survey design, EHR-based analyses), or integrated approaches.

  • Partner with clinicians, operational leaders, and interdisciplinary teams to develop research questions and evaluation designs that inform care delivery decisions.

  • Develop and submit manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and present findings at national conferences.

  • Contribute to new research proposals and grant submissions, including opportunities to develop the candidate's own funded research agenda.

  • Pursue independent scholarly interests aligned with the broader research program, building toward an independent research career.

Training and Mentorship

The Research Associate will receive structured mentorship from the principal investigator and will be part of a collaborative research team that includes clinical and operational partners across Mayo Clinic. Professional development activities include:

  • Weekly one-on-one mentorship focused on career development and research progress

  • Manuscript development and grant writing support

  • Opportunities to lead evaluation studies from design through dissemination

  • Exposure to health system leadership and the operational context of care delivery research
