What is a reputation manager?

Reputation managers are professionals who help individuals or organizations maintain, improve, and protect their public image, especially online. Their main tasks include monitoring media coverage, responding to negative reviews or comments, and promoting positive content to shape public perception. They often work with businesses, celebrities, and anyone concerned about their digital footprint. Reputation managers use various strategies, such as search engine optimization (SEO), public relations campaigns, and crisis management to influence public opinion. Their goal is to ensure that their clients are seen in the best possible light by audiences and stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a reputation manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Reputation Manager, you need expertise in public relations, crisis management, and digital communications, often supported by a degree in communications, marketing, or a related field. Familiarity with social media monitoring tools, SEO strategies, and online analytics platforms is essential for tracking and shaping public perception. Strong interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to remain calm under pressure help you effectively manage sensitive issues and build positive stakeholder relationships. These skills are crucial for proactively protecting and enhancing an organization's brand image in today's fast-paced digital environment.

What are common challenges faced by reputation managers when working with cross-functional teams?

Reputation managers often collaborate with marketing, PR, customer service, and legal teams to ensure consistent messaging and mitigate potential risks. A common challenge is aligning the priorities and communication styles of different departments, especially during a crisis or when responding to negative publicity. Reputation managers must be proactive in fostering clear communication, setting shared goals, and quickly coordinating responses. Building strong relationships across teams can help streamline processes and improve overall brand perception.

Job description

The Role
We are seeking a strategic marketing leader to own OneMain's organic brand content strategy across social and other reputation-building channels. This role is responsible for shaping how OneMain is experienced by customers, prospective employees, community partners and other key external audiences through compelling content, audience engagement and data-driven optimization.
As the enterprise owner of OneMain's organic brand content ecosystem, this role develops integrated content strategies that strengthen brand reputation, activate our Employer Value Proposition (EVP), expand audience reach and support OneMain's visibility across both traditional and emerging discovery platforms, including AI-powered search experiences.
This role partners closely with Corporate Communications, HR, Talent Acquisition, Legal/Compliance and business leaders to ensure content aligns with enterprise messaging, brand standards and regulatory requirements. While highly collaborative, this role serves as the strategic owner of organic brand content-operating independently from strategy through execution and continuously evolving how OneMain shows up across owned channels.
This role does not manage paid media or advertising. It does oversee content production budgets, including photography, video production and freelance/contractor resources supporting organic content.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and lead OneMain's integrated organic brand content strategy across owned channels.
  • Define the enterprise editorial strategy and content roadmap aligned to business and brand priorities.
  • Lead end-to-end content planning, creation and execution across LinkedIn, Meta, YouTube, Glassdoor, Handshake and future platforms.
  • Ensure a consistent, differentiated brand voice across customer, employer and reputation content.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen OneMain's reputation and reach with existing and emerging audiences.
  • Collaborate with Corporate Communications, HR, Legal/Compliance and business stakeholders to ensure alignment with enterprise messaging and regulatory requirements.

Audience Growth & Brand Reputation
  • Translate OneMain's EVP into compelling employee and recruiting content.
  • Partner with HR to elevate employee stories, executive voices and authentic brand advocacy.
  • Manage community engagement across owned channels using consistent brand voice and sound judgment.
  • Monitor audience sentiment, industry trends and competitive activity to inform strategy.
  • Identify opportunities to expand organic reach through employee advocacy, peer amplification and new platform capabilities.
Content Operations
  • Own the enterprise editorial calendar and cross-functional content governance process.
  • Manage photography, video and freelance production budgets and external partners.
  • Build relationships with internal subject matter experts to source and develop brand stories.
  • Operate independently across multiple initiatives, balancing strategic priorities with flawless execution.

Performance, Innovation & AI Visibility
  • Own reporting and performance measurement across organic channels.
  • Translate data into actionable recommendations for senior leaders.
  • Continuously test new formats, platform features and storytelling approaches.
  • Partner with SEO/GEO initiatives to strengthen OneMain's visibility within AI-generated search and discovery experiences.

Qualifications
  • 7+ years of experience in brand marketing, brand reputation, content strategy or organic social strategy for enterprise brands.
  • Demonstrated success leading cross-functional initiatives from strategy through execution.
  • Experience developing employer brand and recruitment marketing content.
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills across matrixed organizations.
  • Excellent writing, editing and brand storytelling abilities.
  • Experience with social publishing/listening platforms and analytics tools.
  • AI fluency and sound editorial judgment.
  • Experience presenting recommendations and performance insights to senior leadership.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities independently.
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications or a related field.

What Success Looks Like
  • Strengthens OneMain's brand reputation across key external audiences.
  • Serves as a trusted strategic partner across Marketing, HR and Corporate Communications.
  • Owns initiatives independently from strategy through execution.
  • Uses performance insights to continuously improve content effectiveness.
  • Keeps OneMain's brand presence modern, relevant and visible across evolving digital and AI-driven channels.

Target base salary range is $90,000-110,000, which is based on various factors including skills and work experience. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for a competitive compensation program that is based on individual and company performance
