Job description

The Virginia League for Planned Parenthood is seeking a Part-Time Registered Nurse to join the team at our Hamilton Health Center in Richmond!

Registered Nurses at VLPP provide nursing expertise before, during and after abortion care in compliance with VLPP medical protocols once appropriate training and privileges are obtained. This may include patient triage, obtaining history and vital signs, abortion education, obtaining relevant laboratory testing, ultrasound and reviewing consent forms with a patient.
Registered Nurses are also responsible for starting IVs, performing pre-sedation assessments and recovery room nursing care including reviewing post-procedure instructions with patients.
Nurses may also provide support to patients calling with concerns after their care at VLPP through the Clinical Consultation Line on days in which direct patient care is not required on an as needed basis.

Education / Certification Requirements: Current State of Virginia Registered Nurse; current BLS certification

Additional Qualifications: Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred; Previous experience in reproductive health care, abortion care, and/or ambulatory surgical centers are preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities (may include some or all of the following):

  • Perform all tasks according to VLPP Medical Standards and Guidelines as well as relevant HIPAA, CLIA, OSHA, ASC and other regulatory requirements, including infection control standards and security guidelines.
  • Serve as a Recovery Room and/or IV / Sedation nurse on procedure days. The nurse may also be performing ultrasounds, patient histories and providing education/consent as needed. Will be responsible for clearing the recovery room and assuring the rooms are stocked and ready for patient care.
  • Completes pre-sedation patient assessments and prepares patients for procedures, including collecting baseline vitals and IV starts.
  • Supervise patient recovery area following procedures according to MS amp;G standards including assessing for stability for discharge and alerting clinician to any signs of complication. Provide discharge instructions to patients, including: what to expect after an abortion and/or sedation, review of emergency precautions and how to contact VLPP staff in case of emergencies, contraceptive education, additional support resources, etc.
  • Prepares recovery room including cleaning and stocking supplies and equipment prior to each clinic session and between patients; monitor inventory and report supply needs to Health Center Manager
  • Prepare medications for administration per physician’s instructions including drawing up and labeling lidocaine and/or saline; count/co-sign narcotics records as necessary.
  • Coordinate and/or administer emergency procedures as needed and per provider’s instructions. Perform inventory of crash carts and complete any additional Quality Assurance tasks ( ex. ASC logs, checking oxygen, monthly emergency carts, AED, etc).
  • May provide support to patients calling with concerns after their care at VLPP through the Clinical Consultation Line as needed.
  • Perform accurate and thorough medical record documentation in patient records as required per MS amp;Gs.

Schedule: Part-time, 3 days a week; Hours may vary between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm; procedure days are typically Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, but may vary.

Pay: Starts at $40.06/hr. Bilingual candidates are eligible for a $1/hr increase with the completion of a successful 3rd party language assessment.
