What is a repossession agent?

A repossession agent, often called a repo agent, is a professional responsible for recovering property—such as vehicles, boats, or other assets—that have been leased or financed but not paid for according to the terms of a loan agreement. When a borrower defaults on their payments, the lender may hire a repossession agent to retrieve the collateral. Repo agents must follow state and federal laws to ensure the process is legal and avoid breaching the peace. They typically work for repossession companies or as independent contractors. The job often involves locating assets, negotiating with owners, and safely transporting the repossessed property.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a repossession agent?

To thrive as a Repossession Agent, you generally need a valid driver's license, knowledge of state repossession laws, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with GPS tracking systems, tow trucks, and recovery management software is typically required. Strong conflict resolution, situational awareness, and effective communication skills help navigate tense situations and ensure safety. These skills are crucial for conducting lawful, efficient repossessions while minimizing risk and maintaining professionalism.

What are some typical challenges faced by repossession agents, and how are they addressed on the job?

Repossession agents often encounter challenges such as dealing with difficult or emotional vehicle owners, locating hard-to-find assets, and working in potentially stressful or confrontational situations. Companies usually provide training on conflict de-escalation, legal compliance, and safety procedures to help agents manage these scenarios. Strong communication skills and teamwork are essential, as agents often coordinate with lenders, law enforcement, and dispatchers to ensure safe and lawful repossessions.

Understanding these differences helps job seekers identify the right career path in the debt recovery industry.

What You’ll Do

As an Auto Loan Collections Specialist, you’ll:

  • Manage assigned auto-loan accounts through all stages of delinquency, from one day past due through repossession referral and support.
  • Make high-volume inbound and outbound customer contacts to understand the reason for delinquency and identify appropriate solutions.
  • Negotiate payment arrangements within established company guidelines and monitor promises to pay.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of customer contacts, payment arrangements, account changes, complaints, visits, and repossession recommendations.
  • Use approved skip-tracing and account-research methods to locate customers and update contact information.
  • Answer customer questions and resolve routine concerns professionally, escalating sensitive or higher-risk matters when appropriate.
  • Identify accounts that meet established criteria for repossession consideration and make recommendations to the Branch Manager.
  • Partner with the Remarketing Department by providing necessary account information and documentation for approved repossessions.
  • Conduct occasional local customer visits when telephone contact has been unsuccessful and an account is approaching repossession referral.
  • Complete welcome calls with newly opened auto-loan customers to establish relationships, verify contact information, answer questions, and review payment expectations and options.
  • Provide requested account information or documentation to the appropriate department for insurance claims.
  • Provide backup support for administrative functions necessary to maintain branch operations while keeping collections as your primary responsibility.
  • Deliver courteous, professional service to customers, dealers, and internal partners.
What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who brings:

  • 2+ years of collections experience.
  • Auto-finance, consumer-lending, or closely related collections experience preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent negotiation, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution abilities.
  • The ability to manage a high-volume account queue while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple time-sensitive priorities.
  • The ability to handle sensitive and confidential financial information with discretion.
  • Comfort using account-management and communication systems.
  • The ability to work effectively with branch management, internal departments, dealers, and other partners.
  • A valid driver’s license and legally required automobile insurance, along with reliable transportation for occasional local customer visits.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
