Job description

Metrics & Reporting Designer/Analyst

Job Type: Contract (12-month)

Location: Denver, CO

Work Setting: Hybrid (3 days on-site)

Rate: $90-$100 per hour based upon experience

Position Summary

Unison Systems is looking for a skilled Metrics & Reporting Designer/Analyst for our client located in Englewood, CO. This role serves as a strategic bridge between business stakeholders and technical development teams, translating complex business challenges into well-defined metrics frameworks. You will design the visualizations and dashboards that enable data-driven decision making across the organization, leveraging strong analytical skills and SQL proficiency to deeply understand data and validate assumptions. Rather than performing the technical development itself, this position produces clear, actionable requirements for both business and technical audiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct structured discovery sessions with business stakeholders to uncover needs, pain points, and decision-making gaps, and document current-state reporting processes to identify opportunities for improvement or consolidation.
  • Define KPIs, metrics, and dimensions that reflect business performance, and design metric hierarchies, taxonomies, and balanced measurement frameworks (leading and lagging indicators) that ensure consistency and reusability.
  • Establish clear metric definitions including calculation logic, data sources, refresh cadence, and ownership, validating designs against business rules and historical data using SQL.
  • Design intuitive, user-centered dashboards and reports, selecting appropriate visualization types (charts, tables, scorecards, maps) and applying data visualization best practices such as hierarchy, color theory, and cognitive load principles.
  • Create wireframes, mockups, and prototypes to align stakeholders on layout and user experience before development begins, tailoring views for executive, manager, and operational audiences.
  • Write and execute SQL queries to explore data, validate metric logic, profile data sources, and confirm data availability and quality, collaborating with data engineers to document data gaps or transformation requirements.
  • Author Business Requirements Documents (BRDs) and Technical Requirements Documents (TRDs), and maintain a metrics catalog documenting definitions, owners, lineage, and business context.
  • Partner with development teams as the primary point of contact throughout the delivery lifecycle, conducting TRD walkthroughs, reviewing build output against requirements, and validating completed builds through user acceptance testing (UAT).
  • Present metric designs and dashboard concepts to stakeholders at all levels, manage expectations around scope and timelines, and support adoption through training and documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in a business analysis, data analysis, or BI/reporting role.
  • Proficiency in SQL, including the ability to write complex queries with joins, aggregations, window functions, and CTEs to explore and validate data.
  • Demonstrated experience gathering requirements from non-technical stakeholders and translating them into documented specifications.
  • Experience designing dashboards or reports in a BI tool such as Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or Qlik.
  • Strong analytical thinking with the ability to frame ambiguous business problems as measurable outcomes and prioritize solutions by impact and effort.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging to both executive and technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to create wireframes, mockups, or prototypes using tools such as PowerPoint, Excel, Word, or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)

  • Tableau experience preferred.
  • Experience with a formal metrics framework such as OKRs, Balanced Scorecard, or North Star metrics.
  • Familiarity with data warehouse concepts and dimensional modeling (star/snowflake schemas, facts, dimensions).
  • Exposure to data catalog or data governance tools.
  • Experience working in Agile or Scrum delivery environments.
  • Background in a domain-specific analytics function such as finance, marketing, operations, or customer experience.
