The Software Engineer/Developer position is located within the IT department and will report to the Assistant Director of IT. This position is for a lead web application developer with a solid software development background, demonstrated ability to integrate applications through web APIs, and a passion for leveraging cutting-edge technology to address user needs. The individual will focus on development efforts in the WIDA Secure Portal, which acts as the hub for access to WIDA online product offerings, as well as other custom software development and solutions integration to platforms like Canvas LMS and Salesforce to support WIDA operations.

Remote work is an option for this position on a voluntary basis; however, it is important to note that this role is headquartered in Madison, WI, and the tasks of the position require occasional work-related travel. If working remotely out-of-state, travel back to UW-Madison would not be reimbursable, and other business travel will require cost comparisons between your home and Madison, WI.

WIDA operates in a Windows-based environment and a Dell PC laptop will be issued for use in this role.Software and virtual connection tools that are critical to our work dictate that WIDA staff work on a PC.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Prepares program documentation and training requirements
  • Develops or modifies technical specifications for moderately-complex projects using disciplined software development practices
  • Prepares detailed system design specifications for system integration and upgrades
  • Maintains and troubleshoots applications, systems, or websites
  • Implements data structure and systems performance strategies
  • Reviews application design specifications, codes new applications, and makes enhancements to existing applications

Required Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience in the design and development of full stack applications utilizing Microsoft .NET and SQL Server backend.

  • 2+ years of experience developing front-end applications using Angular

  • Proficiency with C#.NET, ASP.Net Core, TypeScript, HTML5, CSS, Javascript, Microsoft Entity Framework, relational database design and SQL queries.

  • Strong understanding of software development best practices including secure coding practices, encryption technologies, source code control with Git, common design patterns, code refactoring and re-use.

  • Knowledge of optimizing applications for performance, reliability and maintainability.

  • Experience leading code reviews, enforcing coding standards, and contributing to automated testing including load tests.

  • Collaborative approach to problem solving. Excellent communication, customer service, teamwork and issue resolution skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with single-sign-on solutions such as OpenIDConnect

  • Experience with Salesforce APEX development and integrations

  • Familiarity with AI coding agents like ClaudeCode, Codex, GitHub Copilot

Education:

Bachelor's degree required in field of Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field
