What is remote writing and editing?

Remote writing and editing refers to creating, revising, and proofreading written content from a location outside of a traditional office setting, typically using a computer and internet connection. Professionals in this field may work as freelancers or for companies, handling tasks like blog posts, articles, marketing copy, technical documentation, or academic content. The flexibility of remote work allows editors and writers to collaborate with clients and teams worldwide, often using digital tools for communication and project management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote writing editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Writing Editor, you need excellent grammar, strong editing skills, and a solid understanding of various writing styles, typically supported by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with editing software such as Grammarly, Microsoft Word Track Changes, and content management systems (CMS) is commonly required. Attention to detail, time management, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with writers and meeting deadlines. These skills ensure high-quality, error-free content and smooth workflow in a distributed, remote environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote writing editors, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote writing editors often face challenges such as maintaining clear communication with writers, managing multiple deadlines, and staying organized without in-person supervision. To address these challenges, it is helpful to use collaborative tools like shared documents, project management software, and regular video meetings to ensure alignment and transparency. Establishing a structured daily routine and setting clear expectations with writers can also help manage workflow and maintain high-quality standards.

Job description

Why Great Gray?
At Great Gray Group, we strive to set the bar for the retirement services industry. Our goal is to deliver advanced retirement solutions that combine our core fiduciary services with robust investment options, innovative technology, and dedicated client service. We focus on making choices clearer, transitions smoother, and the client experience more delightful. Complacency isn't in our vocabulary. Every day, we look for opportunities to better serve our clients, be an excellent business partner, and earn the trust of those who rely on us.

The Role

Great Gray is looking to add a Director of Content to our Marketing team. This role owns the editorial engine and content inventory that turns marketing intelligence into published assets. Reporting to the CMO, the Director of Content is the thought leadership production layer of the organization — taking positioning from Product Marketing and campaign briefs from Demand Gen and RPAG Growth, and producing the written content that fuels the entire demand generation machine across both the Great Gray Trust Company and RPAG brands. This role sits at the intersection of strategy and execution — you will set the direction and own the delivery. The ideal candidate comes out of the financial services industry, ideally with deep experience in the defined contribution space from an asset manager, consultancy, broker-dealer, or similar firm.

Location

This position will work from our Boston, MA office. Great Gray currently supports a hybrid work model with 4 days onsite, and 1 day remote.

Visa sponsorship or transfer of an existing visa is not available for this position. Applicants must be authorized to work directly for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship or transfer.

Responsibilities

  • Own editorial strategy and the content calendar across both Great Gray Trust Company (GGTC) and Retirement Plan Advisory Group (RPAG) brands
  • Produce long-form content assets including whitepapers, e-books, guides, and research reports (e.g., CIT Clarity Series, Private Markets, Fiduciary Forum)
  • Produce short-form content including blog posts and newsletter content on a consistent cadence for both brands
  • Govern brand voice and manage compliance review for all published content
  • Build and manage the outsource layer: brief, QA, and maintain feedback loops with FinServ specialist freelance writers and AI-assisted draft workflows
  • Measure content performance and contribute to content-to-MQE attribution reporting
  • Maintain RPAG monthly content cadence: blogs, toolkits, newsletter, and member spotlights
  • Maintain GGTC monthly content cadence: thought leadership, distributor briefs, executive blog posts, and newsletter
  • Produce cross-brand content series including CIT Clarity Series, Private Markets whitepaper, and Fiduciary Forum
  • Produce campaign-specific content — scripts, webinar content, infographics — to support growth and demand gen campaigns
  • Complete other related duties as assigned

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years of content or editorial experience, with financial services or retirement/Defined Contribution (DC) plan industry expertise
  • Demonstrated editorial management skills: ability to maintain a cross-brand content calendar and manage competing priorities from multiple internal stakeholders
  • Experience briefing, QA-ing, and managing freelance writers and/or content agencies
  • Working knowledge of regulatory review requirements for financial services content
  • Ability to maintain distinct brand voices for multiple entities (institutional vs. advisor-enablement audiences)
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills across long- and short-form formats
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity.
  • Your standards reflect our core values: Growth Mindset, Disciplined Curiosity, Grit, Results Ownership, Collaboration.

Base Pay Range*

$150,000-$175,000

We have a comprehensive and competitive benefits package at Great Gray. Some of the highlights are:
·         Be an integral part of a high-growth organization!
·         Competitive compensation package
·         Group medical, dental and vision insurance

·         Eligible employees may also contribute to a 401(k) plan with an advantageous employer contribution model, upholding our mission to support our employees in retirement

Company Background
Great Gray is the leading independent provider of trustee and administrative services to Collective Investment Trusts (“CITs”), with over $370 billion in CIT assets under management, across more than 1,020 funds. We proudly work with more than 80 subadvisors, including leading firms such as AllianceBernstein, American Funds, BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, MetLife, Neuberger Berman, PGIM, PIMCO and Raymond James.

CITs are more than just an investment vehicle. They represent a forward-thinking approach to retirement planning. These tax-exempt, pooled investment vehicles are offered to employer-sponsored retirement plans, like 401(k)s. CITs are comparable to mutual funds, but, because they are tailored for the institutional retirement market, they can offer distinct advantages, including efficient administration and cost-effectiveness. CITs have a history dating back over 90 years; but they have gained favor over the past decade, driven by innovations, and Great Gray has been at the forefront.

Great Gray has consistently delivered year-over-year growth at an above market rate and is investing in the continued development of its core CIT business as well as complementary administrative services and technology solutions for the retirement market.

Madison Dearborn Partners (“MDP”) purchased Great Gray from Wilmington Trust in April 2023. As a result, Great Gray is an independent company owned by funds affiliated with MDP.

Investor Background
MDP is a leading private equity investment firm based in Chicago. Since MDP's formation in 1992, the firm has raised aggregate capital of over $37 billion and has completed over 160 platform investments across nine flagship funds. MDP invests across five dedicated industry verticals, including financial services, healthcare, technology and government services.

Equal Employment Opportunity Policy
Great Gray Group, LLC is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender perception or identity, national origin, age, marital status, protected veteran status, disability status or other non-merit factor.
