These volunteers typically help build, maintain, or improve websites and web applications for nonprofits, startups, or community initiatives. The role can involve coding, designing user interfaces, troubleshooting technical issues, and collaborating virtually with team members. Volunteering remotely as a web developer allows individuals to gain experience, build their portfolio, and contribute to meaningful causes while enjoying the flexibility of working from home.

Objective
To lead the migration and implementation of a client's subdomain into the main website experience while partnering closely with internal engineering, product, marketing, and creative stakeholders. This developer will serve as a trusted technical partner who can navigate a complex backend environment, execute efficiently, and help establish scalable website workflows that empower the marketing team to move faster independently.
Profile overview
We are seeking an experienced web developer with deep expertise in WordPress and Squarespace to support a high-visibility website migration and messaging refresh. This role requires a highly collaborative and technically strong developer who can work cross-functionally with internal engineering and product teams.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on implementor, but can see how the work fits into the bigger picture. They should be comfortable translating business and brand goals into scalable web solutions while ensuring a smooth migration process and high-quality user experience.
This developer will work closely with a contract website copywriter and designer to implement updated messaging, optimize page structure and performance, and support ongoing website improvements.
Scope
Duration: Website update project, with opportunity for ongoing retainer following
Commitment: 150-200 hours (to be scoped with the developer)

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the migration of a subdomain into the primary website experience
  • Collaborate closely with internal engineering and product teams to ensure technical alignment and implementation integrity
  • Build trusted working relationships with cross-functional stakeholders, particularly marketing, product, and engineering teams
  • Implement updated website designs, messaging, and content in partnership with a contract writer and designer
  • Develop scalable website structures and workflows that enable the marketing team to make updates more efficiently over time
  • Maintain and optimize WordPress and Squarespace environments, ensuring site stability, responsiveness, accessibility, and performance
  • Troubleshoot technical issues related to migration, CMS functionality, integrations, redirects, templates, and page performance
  • Advise on website best practices, technical feasibility, and implementation strategy throughout the project lifecycle
  • Support SEO and content migration considerations during implementation
  • Ensure high attention to detail across QA, responsive behavior, and user experience
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of professional web development experience
  • Strong hands-on experience with both WordPress and Squarespace (required)
  • Proven experience leading or supporting complex website migrations and CMS transitions
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, product, marketing, and creative stakeholders
  • Strong understanding of CMS architecture, responsive development, SEO fundamentals, and website performance optimization
  • Experience working within technically complex backend environments and navigating cross-functional approval processes
  • Ability to independently manage implementation while communicating clearly around risks, dependencies, and timelines
  • Strong problem-solving skills and comfort operating in evolving, fast-moving project environments
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with healthcare, marketplace, or consumer-facing digital platforms
  • Familiarity with modern front-end frameworks and component-based web systems
  • Experience improving CMS workflows to support non-technical marketing teams
