What is a remote web accessibility specialist?

A remote web accessibility specialist is a professional who works from a remote location to ensure websites and digital content are accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. They evaluate websites for compliance with accessibility standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), suggest improvements, and may assist in implementing accessible design and code. Their work helps organizations make their digital content usable for people with visual, auditory, cognitive, or motor impairments, improving both usability and legal compliance.

How does a remote web accessibility specialist typically collaborate with developers and designers to ensure accessible digital products?

As a remote web accessibility specialist, you'll often work closely with developers and designers through virtual meetings, code reviews, and shared documentation. Your role involves providing actionable feedback on design wireframes and code to ensure compliance with accessibility standards like WCAG. Effective communication and the use of collaboration tools (such as Slack, Jira, or GitHub) are essential to bridge gaps and integrate accessibility best practices throughout the development lifecycle. Regularly hosting training sessions and creating clear accessibility guidelines also help foster a more inclusive team culture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote web accessibility specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Web Accessibility Specialist, you need a solid understanding of web accessibility standards (such as WCAG), web development fundamentals (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), and experience with accessibility audits. Familiarity with tools like screen readers (JAWS, NVDA), automated testing platforms (axe, WAVE), and relevant certifications (such as IAAP CPACC) is highly beneficial. Strong communication, problem-solving, and attention to detail are vital soft skills for collaborating with remote teams and effectively identifying accessibility barriers. These competencies are crucial to ensure digital content is inclusive, legally compliant, and usable by people of all abilities.

What is the difference between Remote Web Accessibility vs Remote Web Developer?

Remote Web Accessibility specialists focus on ensuring websites meet accessibility standards, requiring knowledge of WCAG and assistive technologies. Remote Web Developers build and maintain websites, emphasizing coding skills. While both roles collaborate with web teams, accessibility experts specialize in compliance and usability for all users, whereas developers focus on site functionality and design.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Frontend Engineer, Design System based in Netherlands.

This is a senior engineering opportunity focused on building the shared UI foundation that powers multiple products and teams.
You will own and evolve a modern design system spanning component libraries, design tokens, documentation, and developer tooling.
A key focus will be making the system AI-friendly so both developers and AI agents can create consistent, accessible interfaces by default.
You will work hands-on with React and TypeScript while shaping component APIs, performance, accessibility, theming, and localization.
The role combines deep frontend engineering with close collaboration across design, product, accessibility, and engineering teams.
You will influence technical direction, improve developer experience, and drive adoption of the design system across the organization.
This is an opportunity to shape a foundational platform at the intersection of frontend engineering, design systems, and AI-assisted development.

Accountabilities
  • Build, scale, and continuously evolve the design system, including its component library, design tokens, documentation, and supporting tooling.
  • Develop the system for AI-assisted development, enabling coding tools and AI agents to consume components, tokens, guidelines, and machine-readable interfaces effectively.
  • Design robust component APIs that minimize misuse and make correct implementation intuitive for both human and AI developers.
  • Write high-quality, performant frontend code using React and TypeScript while establishing strong standards for component quality and consistency.
  • Partner with designers, product managers, and engineers to define components and take them from concept through production-ready implementation.
  • Build accessible components aligned with WCAG 2.2 AA and incorporate accessibility best practices throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Own the developer experience, including Storybook, documentation, guidelines, versioning, component APIs, and smooth migration paths.
  • Implement and maintain theming, white-label capabilities, localization, and right-to-left support for a global user base.
  • Monitor adoption, contributor feedback, and evolving platform capabilities to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Help establish the technical roadmap and direction of the design system over the next 6-12 months.
  • Champion adoption of shared components and best practices across engineering teams.
  • Contribute to a culture of strong frontend engineering, thoughtful design, accessibility, and improved developer productivity.
Requirements
  • At least 5 years of software engineering experience, including 3 or more years at senior level, with experience building frontend platforms or shared UI systems.
  • Demonstrated ownership of a design system or component library used across multiple products or engineering teams.
  • Expert knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and TypeScript, with strong hands-on React experience and familiarity with modern frontend build tooling.
  • Strong understanding of component API design, shared-library versioning, and developer experience.
  • Experience with, or strong interest in, making component libraries consumable and usable by AI-powered development tools and agents.
  • Solid knowledge of responsive design, browser compatibility, frontend architecture, and web performance.
  • Practical experience building and validating accessible interfaces against WCAG 2.2 AA and EN 301 549 standards.
  • Ability to independently validate accessibility using keyboard navigation and screen readers.
  • Strong attention to visual and technical detail, with the judgment to balance design intent, usability, maintainability, and engineering constraints.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with an ability to work effectively across engineering, product, design, and accessibility teams.
  • Strong sense of ownership and a passion for improving both developer productivity and end-user experience.
  • Strong design sensibility and the confidence to challenge and improve design decisions are highly valued.
  • Experience with production-grade multi-brand theming, localization, internationalization, or RTL support is a plus.
  • Ability to work remotely within Europe and meet applicable right-to-work and compliance requirements.
Benefits
  • Competitive base salary starting at 120,000 / 120,000 / CHF 120,000, depending on location and currency.
  • Stock option plan providing an opportunity to participate in the organization's long-term growth.
  • Full-time employment with no contractor arrangement.
  • 25 days of annual leave plus local public holidays.
  • Remote-first working environment with the option to work from an office where available.
  • Opportunity to work on advanced AI products and contribute to the future of AI-assisted software development.
  • Collaborative environment with strong emphasis on engineering quality, autonomy, ownership, and continuous learning.
  • Opportunity to work alongside experienced engineering, design, product, and AI professionals.
  • Visa sponsorship may be available for eligible candidates already located within the UK or EU, subject to applicable requirements.
  • International working environment with opportunities to collaborate across European and US-based teams.
