Remote Water Design Engineer information

What is a remote water design engineer?

A Remote Water Design Engineer is a professional who specializes in designing water supply, treatment, and distribution systems while working outside of a traditional office environment. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and other engineering tools to create plans and specifications for water infrastructure projects, collaborating with teams and clients virtually. Their responsibilities may include hydraulic modeling, sustainability analysis, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Remote Water Design Engineers play a crucial role in supporting communities by providing safe and reliable water systems, often working for engineering firms, government agencies, or consulting companies. They must possess strong technical, communication, and project management skills to succeed in a remote setting.

How does a remote water design engineer typically collaborate with clients and team members while working offsite?

Remote Water Design Engineers frequently use digital collaboration tools to communicate with clients, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams. Regular video conferences, online project management platforms, and shared design software (like AutoCAD or Civil 3D) help facilitate real-time feedback and coordination. Clear documentation and proactive communication are essential, as remote engineers often need to clarify design intent and address site-specific challenges without being physically present. This setup encourages a structured workflow, but it also requires strong self-management and adaptability to different communication styles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote water design engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Water Design Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or environmental engineering, water systems design, and a relevant engineering degree with licensure (e.g., PE or EIT). Proficiency in CAD software, hydraulic modeling tools (such as EPANET or WaterCAD), and familiarity with remote collaboration platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills are crucial for effective teamwork and project delivery in a remote setting. These competencies ensure that water infrastructure projects are designed efficiently, meet regulatory standards, and are successfully executed despite geographical distance.

What is the difference between Remote Water Design Engineer vs Water Systems Designer?

AspectRemote Water Design EngineerWater Systems Designer

Work EnvironmentRemote or hybrid, collaborating with teams and clientsOffice-based or site visits, sometimes remote
Industry UsageEngineering firms, consulting companies, municipalitiesDesign firms, municipal agencies, consulting companies
Common Search IntentDesigning water systems remotely, engineering rolesCreating water system layouts, project design

The Remote Water Design Engineer and Water Systems Designer roles share similar credentials and industry usage, but the engineer typically works remotely with a focus on engineering principles, while the designer may work more on drafting and layout in an office or on-site setting. Both roles are essential in water infrastructure projects, with the remote engineer often overseeing design quality and compliance.

Job description

ENTRUST Solutions Group is seeking a dynamic Design Engineer II to join our team. In this role, you will engage in a variety of engineering tasks, providing support on project plans for complex projects within our gas business unit. At ENTRUST Solutions Group, we’re proud to be an industry leader in engineering and consulting services—helping modernize, protect, and strengthen critical infrastructure. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys leading projects, solving complex challenges, and building systems that directly support operations.

In this role, you will collaborate with senior engineers, designers, and drafters to develop electrical design packages for complex projects, contributing calculations, drawings, and documentation that meet project requirements and industry standards. You’ll support both small and large projects—taking ownership of discipline-specific design work on simpler efforts while assisting with technical analysis on more complex ones.

Your day will involve working through design challenges, communicating impacts to scope, cost, schedule, and quality, and building proficiency in CAD and engineering tools. You’ll ensure quality by reviewing your own work and participating in peer and QA/QC checks. While client interaction is limited, you’ll help coordinate key information through project leaders and may occasionally support field activities, gaining exposure across the full project lifecycle.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from accredited institution
  • Minimum 1 year of work experience in the pipeline industry or a related engineering or consulting industry

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.

What We Offer:

  • A supportive and inclusive work environment that values diversity and encourages innovation.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and career development.
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, including generous paid time off, 401(k) with company match, tuition reimbursement, and flexible work schedules.
  • Benefits offered include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) plan with company match. Also offered are tuition reimbursement, voluntary life, disability, critical illness, accident and hospitalization plans. HSA or FSA medical accounts and FSA dependent care and transportation/parking accounts are also available. These benefits are subject to employee contribution amounts generally set annually. Full-time employees are eligible to earn PTO hours. May be eligible for discretionary bonus as determined by the company.

    Why Join Us?

At ENTRUST Solutions Group, a Leidos company, we are driven by a commitment to innovation, technical excellence, and delivering the critical infrastructure that powers and connects communities. Together with Leidos, we are building a scaled, end-to-end energy and infrastructure organization focused on modernizing the grid, improving reliability, and helping utilities and network providers meet rising demand.
