Remote Visual Designers often use a variety of digital collaboration tools, such as Slack, Figma, and Zoom, to communicate and share their work with team members across departments. Regular virtual check-ins and feedback sessions are common, ensuring alignment with project goals and design standards. While the remote nature of the role requires strong self-management, it also encourages proactive communication and clear documentation, making it crucial for designers to be organized and responsive. This collaborative structure allows Remote Visual Designers to contribute effectively to projects alongside product managers, developers, and marketers.

What are Remote Visual Designers?

Remote Visual Designers are creative professionals who develop visual concepts and designs for digital or print media while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home. They use graphic design software to create layouts, illustrations, branding materials, and user interfaces, collaborating with teams virtually. Their primary focus is on aesthetics, ensuring that visual elements communicate messages effectively and align with a company's brand. Remote Visual Designers often work with marketing, web development, or product teams to create cohesive visual experiences.

What Does a Remote Visual Designer Do?

The job duties of a remote visual designer focus on creating graphic design content for an employer or client. As a remote visual designer, you work from home to create unique visuals that meet the needs of your employer, so your responsibilities vary from project to project. You usually work within specific guidelines, but some clients include you in the planning and concept development process. You often work on branding projects where you create visuals, color schemes, typography, static and animated web ads, and logos. In this career, you may also have a specialty, such as illustration or typography.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Visual Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Visual Designer, you need a strong portfolio showcasing expertise in graphic design principles, color theory, typography, and proficiency with a design-related degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and Sketch is typically required, along with knowledge of collaborative platforms like Slack or Trello. Strong communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help you stand out when working independently and collaborating remotely with teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering visually compelling work efficiently and maintaining effective teamwork in a remote environment.

  • Work from architectural and structural plans to develop practical details
  • Keep drawing files organized and up to date in the system
  • Revise drawings based on feedback from project teams or customers

Project Support

  • Help clarify design details with our PMs and shop team
  • Coordinate changes based on field conditions or markups
  • Track revisions and make sure your work stays aligned with project schedules

  • You catch small issues before they become big ones
  • You're comfortable working remotely and checking in with a global team

Must-Have:

  • At least 5 years of detailing experience in metal, architectural, or structural projects
  • Strong AutoCAD skills (2D required, 3D is a plus)
  • Ability to read and work from redlines, drawings, and specs
  • Solid attention to detail and the ability to manage your own workload
  • Experience working remotely or with distributed teams

Nice to Have:

  • Advance Steel experience
  • Familiarity with railing systems or fabrication workflows
  • Exposure to U.S. construction standards or design practices

You'll Succeed Here If You...

  • Are dependable, organized, and take pride in your work
  • Communicate well, especially in writing and over video calls
  • Can switch gears when needed and don't mind asking questions to get it right
  • Want to be part of a company that values both growth and accountability
