Job description

About the role and team

Leading at Uber's Infrastructure organization  means relentlessly raising the bar for reliability and availability, while designing a truly cloud native platform that seamlessly runs on multiple cloud providers. We are the Compute team at Uber, and are looking for a strong engineer to come shape the next version of our Compute platform. We own  the foundational compute systems used by every product team at Uber - from control plane services such as node health monitoring to leveraging the latest kernel features to deliver graceful degradation at high utilization. Our company mission is to make transportation as reliable as running water, and we need technical powerhouses to build the dependable, high-performance foundation that supports that vision.

This is a Sr Software Engineer role and we are looking for a proven, large-scale systems thinker who thrives in high-stakes environments. You will navigate the "messy" reality of complex infrastructures spanning global data centers and multiple cloud providers, supporting a diverse variety of workloads. You'll need to make smart decisions with imperfect information and own the outcomes of global architectural choices. If you lead with clarity, build with heart, and are motivated by the challenge of peak efficiency at unparalleled scale - this is where you'll make your mark.

What you'll do

  • Design and build end-to-end systems for orchestration, monitoring, or frameworks that stand the test of massive global scale and high availability.
  • Provide deep technical mentorship across the stack, ensuring architecture and implementations are robust, extensible, and secure.
  • Build a world class, extensible multi-cloud compute platform. Collaborate closely with stakeholders in the big cloud providers to influence their roadmaps per Uber's business needs.
  • Learn from, and often contribute to, the leading edge in Linux open source to enable graceful degradation when there is resource contention
  • Lead and mentor engineers, reviewing code and designs while fostering a culture of continuous learning and humility. You will balance being AI-first while ensuring the quality of our code does not drop.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience building scalable, fault-tolerant platforms, with a track record of delivering business critical services in the cloud.
  • Proficiency in Go, C/C++ or Java) and the ability to define organization-wide standards.
  • Proven experience leading large-scale engineering projects through the entire lifecycle from inception to global productionization.
  • Experience identifying architectural gaps and acting as a multiplier to reduce technical debt across the organization.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7+ years of professional experience building scalable, fault-tolerant platforms, with a track record of delivering business critical services in the cloud.
  • Experience with operating a large fleet of Linux machines. Hands-on experience with Linux internals or container orchestration.
  • Experience building Compute platform in AWS/Azure/GCP/OCI. .
  • Experience in designing Linux features that boost fleet wide resource utilization.
  • Experience in driving cross-team projects.
