What does a Remote Video Streaming Engineer do?

A Remote Video Streaming Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining systems that deliver video content over the internet. They work with various streaming protocols, optimize video quality, and troubleshoot issues related to latency, buffering, and compatibility across devices. These engineers often collaborate with development teams, use cloud-based services, and ensure secure and efficient video transmission. Working remotely, they leverage collaboration tools and remote access to manage streaming infrastructure from anywhere.

What are some common technical challenges a Remote Video Streaming Engineer faces and how can they be addressed?

A Remote Video Streaming Engineer often encounters challenges such as ensuring low-latency streaming, maintaining video quality across different network conditions, and handling high traffic loads efficiently. Addressing these issues typically involves optimizing encoding settings, implementing adaptive bitrate streaming, and using Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) to distribute content closer to end-users. Collaboration with backend developers, network engineers, and QA teams is also essential for troubleshooting and implementing robust solutions. Staying up to date with evolving streaming protocols and codecs is key to ongoing success in the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Video Streaming Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Video Streaming Engineer, you need expertise in video encoding, streaming protocols (like HLS/DASH), and a solid background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as FFmpeg, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), and content delivery networks (CDNs), along with relevant certifications, is highly beneficial. • Oversee the design and governance of our Snowflake-based data platform, including data modeling, ingestion pipelines, and access patterns.
  • Ensure systems are optimized for performance, reliability, and cost efficiency at scale.

Build Event-Driven Data Systems
  • Architect and implement event-based data infrastructure using technologies such as Kafka, SQS, and SNS.
  • Define standards for event schema design, topic management, consumer patterns, and data lineage.
  • Enable reliable, scalable, and observable data flows across distributed systems.
  • Drive Data Governance & Security
  • Establish and enforce data governance standards, including classification, access controls, encryption, retention, and auditability.
  • Ensure alignment with regulatory frameworks such as SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA.
  • Partner with Security teams on threat modeling and risk mitigation for data infrastructure.

Influence Strategy & Execution
  • Lead architectural reviews, RFC processes, and documentation standards.
  • Partner with engineering leadership to influence roadmap prioritization through data-driven insights.
  • Represent the data platform in cross-functional planning and executive-level discussions.

What You'll Need to Be Successful
  • 10+ years of experience in data engineering, database engineering, or data architecture roles.
  • Strong experience designing and scaling large-scale NoSQL databases such as Couchbase, DynamoDB, or similar technologies.
  • Deep expertise in building cloud-native data platforms on AWS.
  • Experience leading complex on-premises to cloud migration initiatives.
  • Hands-on experience with event-driven architectures using Kafka, SQS, SNS, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with modern data platforms such as Snowflake or comparable data warehouses/lakes.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and performance optimization.
  • Ability to evaluate complex architectural tradeoffs and make sound technical decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.

What Will Make You Stand Out
  • Experience in legal technology, SaaS, or other regulated industries.
  • AWS certifications such as Solutions Architect Professional or Database Specialty.
