Summary of Essential Functions
  • Provides continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients. Maintains patient safety by performing verbal redirects, communication with nursing staff, and utilizing stat alarms if patient is engaging in at risk behavior or in imminent danger. Summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance. Knowledgeable and supportive of patient and institutional confidentiality and related hospital policies.

Educational Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

Licenses and Certifications
  • CPR Certification.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Patient Care experience preferred.
  • Ability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure.
  • Ability to perform under stress, when confronted with emergency or critical situations in which sustained attention is critical; works under specific instructions.
  • Previous experience in a hospital environment preferred.
  • Capable of continuous monitoring of patients and always remaining alert while on duty.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients using a microphone and headset
  • Ability to communicate with hospital staff and respond quickly to patient behavioral changes.
  • Ability to use discretion and courtesy when working with patients, visitors, and staff

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to distinguish between numbers and symbols.
  • Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity with substantial movement of wrist and/or fingers.
  • Corrected vision and hearing to normal or near normal range.
  • Extended periods of sitting and/or walking depending on specific duties.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates understanding and proficiency of the use of the AvaSys Tele Sitter Solution software.
  • Always maintains visual observation. Verbally redirects patient over digital 2-way audio device that is in patient room. Immediately summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance.
  • Participates in hand-off of pertinent information/behavior about assigned patients when arriving on unit and upon completion of shift assignment. Arranges meal break times so that relief may be provided to ensure constant patient observation.
  • Provides patient with explanations as necessary but does not counsel or provide opinions. Demonstrates behaviors in line with Service Excellence.
  • Seeks help or advice as soon as possible when patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others. Participates in a collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues. Assures patient environment safety. Seeks assistance with removal of any potential safety hazard from room and reports findings to Primary Care Nurse or Charge Nurse.
  • Demonstrates safe work practices and attitudes, follows safety rules, works to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors, and participates in organizational and department safety programs.
  • Maintains all educational requirements required by division.
  • Maintain professionalism and collaborates effectively with peers from all divisions
  • May perform technical skills for which competence may be verified through educational "checkoffs" or United Regional's precepted orientation programs, including but not limited to: EKG: 12 Lead, Vital signs, blood sugar checks, Venipuncture.
