Remote Video Game Journalism information

What is remote video game journalism?

Remote video game journalism involves reporting on, reviewing, and analyzing video games and the gaming industry while working outside of a traditional office environment. Journalists in this field may write articles, conduct interviews, create video or audio content, and stay up-to-date with the latest gaming trends and releases. They often collaborate with editors and other writers using digital tools, and their work may be published on gaming websites, magazines, or social media platforms. This role requires strong writing skills, a passion for gaming, and the ability to meet deadlines independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote video game journalist?

To thrive as a Remote Video Game Journalist, you need strong writing and research skills, in-depth knowledge of gaming trends, and often a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), SEO tools, and basic multimedia editing software is typically required. Creativity, adaptability, and effective communication are vital soft skills for producing engaging content and collaborating with editors remotely. These competencies ensure timely, high-quality journalism that resonates with gaming audiences in a competitive digital media landscape.

How do remote video game journalists typically collaborate with editors and other team members while working from home?

Remote video game journalists often use digital collaboration tools like Slack, Trello, or Google Workspace to stay connected with editors and colleagues. Regular video meetings, editorial chats, and shared planning documents help ensure everyone is aligned on content deadlines, style guidelines, and review processes. While working remotely can pose communication challenges, successful journalists proactively seek feedback and participate in virtual brainstorming sessions to stay engaged with the team. This collaborative approach helps maintain high-quality game coverage and keeps the workflow smooth.

Job description

Welcome to The Shade Room
Where Black Culture Leads and the Content Always Delivers.
Founded in 2014, The Shade Room is one of the fastest-growing digital media brands in the game, leading the conversation on entertainment, news, politics, and real-life moments that shape and reflect Black culture. Millions of people come to TSR daily for what's really happening, and we never miss.
With a lean, powerhouse team behind the scenes, we mix editorial instincts with social media expertise. We break stories, spark conversation, and keep our audience informed, engaged, and entertained 24/7.
We're headquartered in Los Angeles but fully remote, which means we move fast, think big, and collaborate from wherever we are. Flexibility, creativity, and cultural authenticity are built into our DNA. Whether it's crafting viral headlines, covering breaking news, or celebrating Black excellence, we do it with purpose and style.
If you're driven, creative, and ready to be part of something that's shifting the media landscape-you'll feel right at home at The Shade Room.

About the role
The Shade Room is seeking a charismatic, highly adaptable temporary Social Video Producer to step in front of the camera and bring our new video commentary strategy to life. Working in lockstep with our editorial leadership and the Senior Managing Producer, you will translate traditional aggregated posts into fast-paced, highly engaging video content. This role is a creative incubator; you will actively participate in a deeply collaborative, iterative process-taking real-time feedback to help mold an authoritative, culturally authentic TSR video voice.
What you'll do
  • On-Camera Hosting: Serve as the primary on-camera personality and voice for short-form and medium-form pilot videos, delivering engaging commentary and sharp cultural analysis.
  • Scripting & Content Creation: Swiftly write and adapt short-form scripts based on breaking celebrity news, trending topics, and current TSR aggregated content.
  • Iterative Voice Development: Actively collaborate with the production team, applying constructive feedback to continuously refine, test, and mold your on-camera persona to match the TSR brand voice.
  • Set Management: Provide, set up, and maintain a clean, visually appealing on-camera environment (such as a professional home office or studio-like space) to serve as the backdrop for daily content.
  • Basic Production Execution: Film yourself and utilize basic video editing, sound capture and graphic design skills to quickly package raw content for social feeds under tight deadlines.
  • Audience Engagement: Monitor real-time audience reactions in the comments and through platform data to understand the Roomies' perspective and adapt your on-camera approach to better connect with the community.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Familiarity with the brands and businesses of The Shade Room.
  • Social Video Expertise: Deep understanding of current social video ecosystems, algorithm trends, and formatting
  • Cultural Fluency (Preferred): Deep, intrinsic familiarity with The Shade Room's brand identity, the celebrities and topics the Roomies care about, and the specific nuances, humor, and dynamics of the Roomies' community.
  • On-Camera Charisma: Natural comfort, high energy, and a strong, relatable presence in front of the camera, with the ability to capture viewers' attention within seconds.
  • Short-Form Writing: Strong storytelling skills with the ability to write engaging, concise, and accurate scripts tailored for social media audiences.
  • Patience & Agility: Highly collaborative with the ability to receive real-time direction, incorporate constructive feedback, and adapt quickly in a fast-paced, iterative creative environment.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient with mobile and desktop video editing tools (e.g., CapCut, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro) and basic graphic design workflows to independently package social-first video content.
  • Cultural Fluency: Deep knowledge of pop culture, celebrity news, and the tone, language, and community dynamics unique to The Shade Room.
  • Live Broadcasting Skills (Preferred): Ability to think quickly, improvise, and maintain composure in a live streaming or broadcast environment.

Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Digital Media, Communications, Film/Television Production, or a related field preferred; or equivalent practical experience. Minimum of two (2) years of experience as an on-camera host, digital creator, social media producer, multimedia journalist, or a similar role producing short-form video content (e.g., TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts). Demonstrated portfolio or demo reel showcasing storytelling skills and engaging pop culture or celebrity news content. Experience working under tight deadlines in a fast-paced digital news, entertainment, or social-first media environment. Preferred: Experience hosting or appearing in live-streamed broadcasts (e.g., Twitch, Kick, YouTube Live, TikTok Live).
Duration
This is an 8-week temporary assignment with a tentative start date of August 24, 2026. There is no guarantee of extension or permanent employment.
