What is a remote user testing?

A Remote User Testing job involves evaluating websites, apps, or other digital products by providing feedback on usability, design, and overall user experience. Testers follow specific instructions to complete tasks while sharing their thoughts and observations. Companies use this feedback to improve their products before launching them to a wider audience. No specialized skills are required, but attention to detail and clear communication are essential. Most remote user testing jobs are freelance or part-time, with testers getting paid per completed test.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote user testing, and why are they important?

To thrive in Remote User Testing, you need strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and experience with usability testing, often supported by a background in UX/UI, HCI, or related fields. Familiarity with user testing platforms (such as UserTesting or Lookback.io) and screen recording/annotation tools is commonly required, though formal certifications are not always mandatory. Excellent written and verbal communication, time management, and the ability to provide constructive feedback help you stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for accurately evaluating digital products, delivering clear insights, and ensuring a seamless remote work process.

What are some common challenges faced in remote user testing roles?

One of the most common challenges in remote user testing is maintaining clear communication with product teams when you are not physically present. Testers often need to quickly adapt to different products and testing tools, manage time effectively across multiple projects, and avoid misinterpretation of user feedback due to lack of face-to-face interaction. Working remotely also requires a high level of self-motivation and discipline to meet deadlines without in-person supervision. However, these challenges can be mitigated by proactive communication, thorough documentation of findings, and leveraging collaboration platforms to stay connected with teams.

How do you become a remote user tester?

To become a remote user tester, you typically need to sign up with testing platforms that connect testers with companies, complete profile assessments, and sometimes pass a sample test to demonstrate your ability to evaluate websites or apps. Basic computer skills, a reliable internet connection, and attention to detail are important for success in this role.

Job description

The Sr. UX Strategist, Web Projects position is a senior individual contributor role on 829's Experience, Strategy & Design team. We are looking for a hybrid thinker‐doer with strong agency experience who thrives in both upstream brand strategy and downstream UX execution. Responsibilities and Duties Strategic Client Facilitation: Develop relationships with clients and confidently communicate strategic rationale and research behind proposed directions and recommendations to client teams. Project Management: Handle 4‐5 projects simultaneously, shifting context fluidly across domains and details. Upstream Business & Brand Strategy: Conduct qualitative and quantitative research on brand, competitors, industry leaders, users, and analytics, including competitive research, UX audits, and user behavior analysis using heatmaps and Google Analytics. Robust UX Research: Execute end‐to‐end research through interviews, workshops, surveys, user testing, and other formats, leading survey creation and review for unbiased, statistically significant data. Downstream UX Execution: Build the architectural foundation of large‐scale websites—translate insights into measurable goals, define personas, map journeys, craft sitemaps and IA, and create structural wireframes and user flows. UX Best Practices: Ensure UX protocols are followed, evolve processes and deliverables, and seize opportunities for improvement. Must Haves Agency Experience: 5+ years in an agency setting (client‐side experience considered only if substantial). Application of the role strongly hinges on prior agency work. Exceptional Presentation Skills: Advanced facilitation abilities, executive presence, and organizational prowess. End‐to‐End Portfolio: Demonstrated ability to conduct research and deliver strategic IA artifacts—personas, research narratives, user flows, sitemaps, and wireframes. Design Tool Mastery: Advanced proficiency in Figma for complex wireframing and prototyping. Applied AI Expertise: Hands‐on experience leveraging LLMs (Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT) to accelerate research, content ideation, and strategy workflows. Data‐Driven Mindset: Proven skill translating quantitative data from Google Analytics, heatmaps, and custom surveys into actionable UX recommendations. Project Ownership: Empowered decision‐making, problem‐solving, and project leadership with empathy and authority. Cross‐Functional Acumen: Understanding of waterfall and agile web development, collaboration with designers and developers, and awareness of integrated digital marketing components. Nice‐to‐Haves Experience with SEO, content strategy, and writing. Experience with Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) and CRO platforms. Benefits and Perks We Provide Remote Workplace. Option to work at our office in Boston or remotely in approved states. Paid Time Off. Generous vacation benefits, company holidays, and Summer Fridays. 401K + Match. 401K plan with 4% Safe Harbor employer match after one year. Life Insurance Benefit. No‐cost coverage for family. Short Term Disability Benefit. Coverage for illness or injury. Healthcare. Competitive plans with employer coverage of 80% medical/dental and 100% vision premiums. Commuter Benefits. Pre‐tax funds for transportation savings. Continuing Education. Access to webinars, learning platforms, conference funding, and professional development resources. Salary Range $80,000 – $100,000. Compensation is based on experience, demonstrated skills, and market conditions. 829 Studios is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to equal employment opportunities regardless of race, religion, creed, color, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, mental illness, age, ancestry, genetic information, military service, or any other status protected under applicable federal, state, or local laws. #J-18808-Ljbffr
