What is remote usability testing?

A Remote Usability Testing job involves evaluating websites, apps, or digital products from a user's perspective to identify usability issues. Testers complete tasks, provide feedback, and sometimes participate in recorded sessions while interacting with the product. Companies use this feedback to improve user experience. These jobs are often freelance, project-based, and require no specialized skills beyond following instructions and giving clear feedback.

What does a typical workday look like for someone in remote usability testing?

A typical day in Remote Usability Testing involves planning and conducting tests on websites, apps, or digital products by assigning tasks to users, observing their interactions, and collecting feedback. You may spend time analyzing recorded sessions, documenting usability issues, and compiling comprehensive reports for UX or development teams. Collaboration is often required with designers, product managers, and developers to discuss findings and recommend improvements. The work is primarily independent and remote, but regular virtual meetings or feedback sessions are common to ensure alignment with broader project goals. This structure provides both autonomy and opportunities for impactful contributions to the product development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote usability testing?

To thrive in Remote Usability Testing, you need strong analytical skills, a keen eye for user experience (UX) design, and the ability to evaluate digital products or interfaces, typically supported by a background in UX, HCI, or related fields. Familiarity with usability testing tools (such as UserTesting, Lookback, or Optimal Workshop), screen recording software, and possibly UX certification are often advantageous. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and the ability to provide clear, actionable feedback are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate testing, valuable user insights, and effective collaboration with product teams to improve digital experiences.

Job description

Overview

AARP is the nation's largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to empowering people 50 and older to choose how they live as they age. With a nationwide presence, AARP strengthens communities and advocates for what matters most to the more than 100 million Americans 50-plus and their families: health and financial security, and personal fulfillment. AARP also works for individuals in the marketplace by sparking new solutions and allowing carefully chosen, high-quality products and services to carry the AARP name. As a trusted source for news and information, AARP produces the nation's largest-circulation publications, AARP The Magazine and the AARP Bulletin.

The Technical Product Designer is responsible for translating technical product strategy and user needs into intuitive, effective digital experiences, by designing end-to-end user experiences that align to technical product roadmaps, ensure usability, and drive adoption. Technical Product Designers bridge the gap between an initial idea and the final market launch by building early mock-ups and interactive prototypes to test functionality and gather feedback, prior to technical product teams engaging.

Responsibilities

  • Creates user-centered designs across the full experience lifecycle from discovery and concepting through detailed interaction design and final delivery.
  • Applies and helps evolve design systems, patterns, and guidelines to ensure consistency and scalability across products.
  • Creates interactive prototypes to test ideas, gather feedback, and iterate rapidly before development.
  • Partners with technical product teams to turn technical product requirements and roadmap priorities into clear, actionable design artifacts (flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity UI).
  • Uses insights, user feedback, and data to inform design decisions and continuously improve the experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in User Experience Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Product Design, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in UX/UI, product, interaction, or digital experience design.
  • Proven experience designing end-to-end digital experiences, including user research, user flows, wireframes, interactive prototypes, and high-fidelity user interfaces.
  • Experience using AI-enabled design, prototyping, and application-building tools (e.g., Figma AI, Adobe Firefly, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Replit, Lovable, Bolt, v0) to rapidly create, test, and refine digital solutions.
  • Experience building or configuring web experiences in Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) or a comparable enterprise content management or digital experience platform, including content authoring, templates, components, and workflow management.
  • Strong understanding of platform capabilities and constraints, with the ability to determine when business needs can be met through existing functionality versus requiring new components or technical enhancements.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining design systems, component libraries, and UX standards to ensure scalable and consistent user experiences.
  • Strong knowledge of user-centered design, accessibility, usability testing, and data-informed design practices, with excellent collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills across cross-functional teams.

AARP will not sponsor an employment visa for this position at this time.

Additional Requirements

  • Regular and reliable job attendance
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Exhibit respect and understanding of others to maintain professional relationships
  • Independent judgement in evaluation options to make sound decisions
