Primary responsibilities include: 1) independently underwrite contract bonds adhering to Markel Surety's underwriting philosophy, appropriately assessing the risk presented and properly managing that risk and 2) conduct all forms of marketing to strategically build a profitable book in a designated territory. The underwriter is to have the knowledge and apply the skills required of this position, including knowledge of required and normal ratios, risks associated with various types of construction activities, competition's underwriting attitudes and industry norms for all issues. The underwriter is the source for knowledge and information concerning bonding.
What you'll be doing:
  • Assigned larger and more important agents/brokers

  • Consistently achieves budgeted financial results through superior service, account retention and responsiveness to new business submissions

  • Considers different approaches towards risks based upon class of business

  • Participates on projects having an impact on the business

  • Identifies and captures new business opportunities

  • Able to create tactical sales plans; track results and execute necessary corrective action

  • Open to regular visits to agents

  • Incumbent should have completed 3 - 5 years in an underwriting capacity

  • Associate learns the nuances of the surety rate manual

  • Under minimal supervision makes quick sound decisions and negotiates terms and conditions consistent with underwriting authority limits, standards and within submission timeframes.

  • Takes ownership and responsibility for decisions and outcomes

  • Provides guidance and coaching to others
