What is the difference between Remote Uav System Engineer vs Remote Uav Technician?

AspectRemote Uav System EngineerRemote Uav Technician
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in UAV systemsTechnical diploma or certification in UAV maintenance
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and system integrationField maintenance and troubleshooting
Industry UsageResearch, development, and system deploymentOperational support and repairs

The Remote Uav System Engineer focuses on designing and developing UAV systems, requiring engineering expertise and certifications. In contrast, the Remote Uav Technician handles maintenance and troubleshooting in operational settings. Both roles are essential in the UAV industry but differ in responsibilities and skill requirements.

What does a Remote UAV System Engineer do?

A Remote UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) System Engineer designs, develops, and maintains drone systems and the technology that enables their remote operation. Their work involves integrating hardware, software, and communication systems to ensure UAVs function safely and efficiently, often for applications such as surveillance, mapping, or delivery. They may also troubleshoot issues, optimize performance, and ensure compliance with aviation regulations. Working remotely, these engineers collaborate with multidisciplinary teams using digital tools to achieve project goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote UAV System Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote UAV System Engineer, you need a solid background in aerospace or electrical engineering, strong programming skills, and hands-on experience with UAV platforms. Familiarity with flight control software, simulation tools, embedded systems, and certifications like Part 107 Remote Pilot are typically required. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork or communication skills set top performers apart. These competencies are essential for designing reliable UAV systems, ensuring regulatory compliance, and achieving mission success in remote and dynamic environments.

What are some common challenges Remote UAV System Engineers face when working with geographically dispersed teams?

Remote UAV System Engineers often collaborate with teams located in different regions or time zones, which can present challenges in communication and project coordination. Ensuring that everyone has access to the latest system updates, test results, and design documentation requires strong organizational and technical skills. Additionally, troubleshooting and supporting UAVs remotely may involve virtual simulations or remote access tools, requiring clear documentation and proactive communication to resolve issues efficiently. Building strong relationships and maintaining regular check-ins with team members can help overcome these challenges.

Description

SAIC is seeking a Systems Engineer (MBSE Systems Modeler) to support the development, sustainment, and overhaul of shipboard radar systems. This position will play a critical role in utilizing Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles and tools to develop comprehensive Systems Requirements Models and ensure adherence to rigorous Systems Engineering Technical Review (SETR) processes. The selected candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to align system designs with customer requirements and technical standards. Work is primarily remote, with frequent visits to the customer site at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division.

This is a unique opportunity for experienced systems engineers with strong expertise in MBSE using Cameo Systems Modeler to contribute to the cutting-edge development of radar technology.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Development of Cameo Systems Model for Shipboard Radar Systems:

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive Cameo Systems Requirements Models to support new design, sustainment, and overhaul of shipboard radar systems.
  • Leverage SysML in Cameo to create and manage models that define system architecture, interfaces, behaviors, and data flows critical to radar system performance and functionality.

SETR Process Documentation & Deliverables:

  • Execute tasks in alignment with the Systems Engineering Technical Reviews (SETR) process as outlined in the Radar Technologies Design and Development procedure (IPDM Doc #: 12255-8843-970008), IEEE 15288.1, IEEE 15288.2, and NAVSEA PEO IWS Technical Review Manual.
  • Develop and deliver required SETR documentation and artifacts, including Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP), Test and Evaluation Master Plan (TEMP), Integrated Master Plan (IMP), Block Definition Diagrams (BDD), and Requirements Traceability Verification Matrix (RTVM).

Cross-Discipline Communication & Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineers, systems engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure effective communication and cross-functional integration of requirements and solutions.
  • Facilitate and participate in reviews, providing insights, analysis, and suggestions to address potential risks and propose improvements.

Compliance with Standards and Technical Guidance:

  • Ensure adherence to all applicable processes and standards, including IEEE 15288.1, IEEE 15288.2, NAVSEA PEO IWS Technical Review Manual, and other relevant technical guidance.
  • Align MBSE practices with customer-specified processes and military standards to meet program and mission objectives.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience with MBSE tools and frameworks, specifically hands-on experience with SysML and Cameo Systems Modeler.
  • Knowledge and experience working with the SETR process for program management.
  • Familiarity with the development of SETR-associated documentation, including SEMP, TEMP, IMP, RTVM, and BDD.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and effective communication skills to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Understanding of electrical and mechanical engineering concepts to support effective communication with technical teams.
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain an Interim Secret Clearance to start and a Secret Clearance. SAIC will sponsor the clearance process if necessary.
  • Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen.

Preferred Experience:

  • Strong expertise as a moderate to heavy user of Cameo Systems Modeler.
  • Understanding of shipboard radar systems and related radar technologies.
  • Existing knowledge of NAVSEA PEO IWS Technical Review Manual requirements.
  • Familiarity with military standards relevant to radar systems, such as MIL-STDs.

Location and Work Environment:
This position offers remote flexibility with frequent required travel to the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division, to support customer needs and system development efforts.
