What is remote travel journalism?

Remote travel journalism is a form of reporting and storytelling where journalists document and share travel experiences, destinations, cultures, or events from various locations, often while working remotely rather than being based in a traditional newsroom. These journalists may write articles, create videos, or produce multimedia content for magazines, newspapers, websites, or their own blogs and social media channels. The remote aspect allows them to work from anywhere, offering flexibility and the ability to cover stories from diverse and sometimes off-the-beaten-path locations. Remote travel journalists often rely on digital communication tools and platforms to research, pitch stories, and connect with editors or audiences.

What are some common challenges faced by remote travel journalists, and how can they be addressed?

Remote travel journalists often face challenges such as managing time zones, maintaining reliable internet connectivity, and balancing independent work with collaboration across dispersed teams. To address these, it's important to develop strong organizational skills, invest in portable tech solutions, and establish clear lines of communication with editors and fellow contributors. Additionally, setting realistic deadlines and maintaining flexibility for last-minute changes can help ensure high-quality reporting while adapting to the unpredictable nature of travel.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Travel Journalist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Travel Journalist, you need strong writing, research, and storytelling abilities, often supported by a background in journalism, communications, or a related field. Proficiency with digital content management systems, photography or videography equipment, and social media platforms is typically required. Adaptability, cultural sensitivity, and strong self-motivation are essential soft skills for creating compelling content while working independently across diverse locations. These skills are crucial for producing engaging travel stories that resonate with audiences and maintain credibility in a competitive digital media landscape.

Job description

Grow your journalism career with a global media company
Do you love talking to people? Do you pick up the phone instead of sending an email? Are you driven by chasing quotes, building a contacts book, and landing the interview others can't?
At Key Media, we believe great journalism is built on human connection. AI is transforming how we work-but it's your curiosity, relationships, and reporting instincts that create truly impactful stories.
This is your opportunity to join a high-performing international media company, working on our market-leading insurance portfolio, covering one of the most dynamic sectors in US business.
Why this role stands out
  • 100% remote (US-based) - work from home with flexible hours
  • Medical, dental benefits, EAP & 401(k)
  • Global career opportunities
  • Industry-leading brands - write for Insurance Business America
  • Training & growth - editorial coaching + unlimited LinkedIn Learning
  • Time off that grows with you - extra vacation day each year + paid volunteer day
  • Travel opportunities - attend major events like IB FutureFest
  • Work from anywhere - up to 12 weeks per year abroad

About the role
You'll be reporting for Insurance Business America, a trusted and agenda-setting title read by senior decision-makers across the country.
This is a highly interview-driven role, where you'll:
  • Produce daily news and features on the US insurance market
  • Conduct regular interviews with C-suite executives and industry leaders
  • Break original stories and deliver insightful analysis
  • Build and maintain a strong network of contacts across the insurance sector
  • Represent the brand at conferences, awards, and industry events

You'll be part of a global newsroom that blends traditional reporting with modern tools-including the smart use of AI for research, idea generation, and workflow efficiency, while keeping editorial judgment firmly in human hands.
What we're looking for
  • Experience in journalism (insurance or business reporting is a plus)
  • Strong interviewing skills and confidence speaking with senior stakeholders
  • A proactive approach-comfortable chasing contacts and uncovering stories
  • Excellent writing, news sense, and deadline discipline
  • Interest in using AI as a reporting tool to enhance your work
  • Collaborative, curious, and ambitious mindset
  • US-based, with occasional domestic travel

Why Key Media?
We're a global B2B media company connecting more than 2.4 million professionals each month across insurance, HR, finance, legal, education, and property.
Our culture-known as Orange Energy-is built around collaboration, positivity, ambition, and kindness.
At Key Media, you'll get:
  • Real access to decision-makers and market-moving stories
  • A platform to build your profile and influence industry conversations
  • A chance to experiment with new tools and shape the future of journalism
  • Support from experienced global editors who value quality reporting

If you're passionate about business journalism, eager to build a global portfolio and excited by the blend of traditional reporting and next-generation tools, we'd love to connect with you.
