Job Description: 

The Division of Medical Genetics in the Department of Pediatrics is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to join their team. The postdoc's research projects will focus on inherited metabolic disorders, with a particular emphasis on glycogen storage diseases (GSDs), including GSD type II (Pompe disease). The postdoc will contribute to advancing understanding of the natural history of GSDs and Pompe disease. Research activities will include investigation of the role of the immune system, neurological manifestations of Pompe disease, evaluation of the clinical treatment responses as well as establishing evidence-based guidelines for clinical intervention and clinical trial design. The position will participate in the division's ongoing retrospective and prospective clinical natural history studies to better understand disease progression and clinical outcomes of patients. This postdoc will collaborate with multidisciplinary research team members and clinical specialists to advance science in GSDs. 

This postdoc position requires a minimum two-year commitment and will consist of a hybrid work arrangement (at minimum 60% in office, 40% remote). This position will involve analyzing patient data and coordinating analysis of patient samples.

Responsibilities: 

Manage, store, and analyze clinical research data 

Conduct systematic literature reviews, develop hypotheses, critically think, and brainstorm new ideas with the research team 

Regularly collaborate with multiple experts at and outside of Duke, fellow postdocs, medical trainees, and the rest of the clinical research team 

Communicate and present research findings at department/division meetings, international conferences, and patient education meetings 

Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals in the form of research articles 

Possess the knowledge of basic research integrity, values of ownership of a research project, and follow timelines to achieve deliverables 

Requirements: 

PhD (with clinical research experience), MD, MBBS, DSc, or other doctorate in a relevant field 

For those with a MD or MBBS background, a preference will be for those that have completed residency in pediatrics, internal medicine, medical genetics, neurology or a related field 

A background in metabolic disorders, neurology or immunology will be preferred 

Applicants must have a history of conducting clinical research in the past, including at least 1 publication with first authorship, scientific/medical writing in peer-reviewed medical journals, or platform/poster presentations in conferences/seminars 

Previous experience in grant writing will be preferred 

Previous experience with analyzing and interpreting statistical data will be preferred 

Must possess the knowledge to use citation manager EndNote 

Must be able to accurately translate research findings and relevant literature to a target audience (such as clinicians, geneticists, and other members of the patient care team) 

Demonstration of the following skills: 

Excellent communication skills and an ability to work well with others 

Self-motivated with a strong work ethic 

Detail-oriented and possesses strong planning and organizational skills 

Excellent writing and problem-solving skills
