Job description

About BIA

Business Intelligence Advisors, Inc. (BIA) develops proprietary research and analytical products for institutional investors and other sophisticated clients. Our work combines specialized behavioral research, unique datasets, and technology to help clients identify and evaluate information that traditional financial analysis may overlook.

BIA is expanding its AI-enabled research products and the technology through which clients access and use our analysis. We are seeking a Software Engineer to help develop these products while maintaining and extending the software and data infrastructure that supports our business.

The Position

The Software Engineer will join a small development team and report directly to BIA's Senior Software Engineer. This is a hands-on, mid-level engineering position for someone with strong general software development skills who is interested in applying those skills to AI-enabled products.

You will work primarily with an existing C# and SQL Server environment, while also developing new capabilities using Python, large language models, APIs, and related technologies. The position includes a mix of new product development, integration work, database and backend development, and improvements to existing applications.

Because our development team is small, the role offers substantial ownership and exposure to the full software development lifecycle and the rest of the organization. The successful candidate will be comfortable working in an established codebase, learning unfamiliar technologies when needed, and collaborating with colleagues throughout the business to turn practical needs into reliable software.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain software supporting BIA's AI-enabled research products and internal business applications.
  • Maintain and extend BIA's existing software infrastructure, built primarily with C# and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Develop backend services, APIs, data-processing tools, and product capabilities that allow clients and internal users to access, search, analyze, and use BIA's proprietary research.
  • Build and integrate capabilities involving large language models and related technologies.
  • Work with external APIs, data feeds, and third-party services.
  • Develop tools that improve internal workflows and operational efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot production issues and improve the reliability, maintainability, and performance of existing applications.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Software Engineer and colleagues across research, product, sales, and operations to define requirements and implement practical technical solutions.
  • Contribute to technical design decisions, documentation, testing practices, and ongoing improvements to BIA's development processes.
  • Take ownership of assigned projects and communicate clearly regarding progress, tradeoffs, risks, and technical decisions.

Core Qualifications

  • Professional software development experience, typically three or more years, or an equivalent level of demonstrated capability.
  • Experience developing applications using C# and relational databases.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience working with Microsoft SQL Server or a comparable relational database platform.
  • Experience with Python or the ability to become productive with it quickly.
  • Experience developing, integrating, or consuming APIs.
  • Strong understanding of general software engineering principles, including application design, testing, debugging, source control, and maintainable code.
  • Experience working with and extending existing applications and codebases.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and follow projects through to completion in a remote environment.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and nontechnical colleagues.

Helpful Experience

Candidates are not expected to have all of the following. Experience in one or more of these areas would be useful:

  • Developing applications or workflows that use large language models or commercial AI APIs.
  • Model training, fine-tuning, evaluation, prompt development, or retrieval-augmented generation.
  • Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers or other tools for connecting AI systems with external applications and data.
  • Ingesting and processing data from third-party feeds and APIs.
  • Designing, optimizing, or tuning relational databases.
  • Microsoft Azure or another major cloud platform.
  • ASP.NET and web application development.
  • JavaScript or React.
  • Vector databases, semantic search, or other AI-oriented retrieval technologies.
  • Financial services, investment research, financial data, or other data-intensive professional products.

What We Are Looking For

The strongest candidate will be a capable and pragmatic software engineer rather than a narrowly specialized AI researcher. You should have solid development fundamentals, be comfortable working across multiple parts of an application, and be interested in learning and applying emerging AI technologies.

You may be a good fit for this position if you:

  • Enjoy the variety and ownership that come with working on a small development team.
  • Can balance new product development with the practical work of maintaining and improving existing systems.
  • Are comfortable investigating unfamiliar systems and solving problems without a highly prescriptive roadmap.
  • Make thoughtful technical decisions based on business needs rather than novelty alone.
  • Communicate proactively and work effectively in a fully remote environment.
  • Want your work to have a direct and visible impact on products, clients, and business operations.

Why Join BIA

  • Work directly with BIA's Senior Software Engineer and have meaningful input into product and technical decisions.
  • Help build AI-enabled products based on proprietary research, analytical methodologies, and datasets.
  • Gain broad experience across backend development, data infrastructure, APIs, AI integration, and product development.
  • Take ownership of substantive projects in a small-team environment.
  • Work remotely from anywhere in the United States.

Compensation

  • The anticipated base salary range for this position is $100,000 to $115,000 per year, depending on experience, skills, and qualifications.

BIA is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other status protected by applicable law. BIA can only consider candidates who are legally authorized to work in the U.S. for an unlimited period without sponsorship.
