What is a remote tester?

Remote testers are professionals who evaluate software, websites, or products from a location outside of the company's physical office. They perform testing tasks such as identifying bugs, verifying features, and ensuring usability using digital tools and communication platforms. Remote testers play a crucial role in quality assurance by providing feedback and reporting issues to development teams. Their work helps companies deliver reliable and user-friendly products without the need for on-site presence.

What do remote testers do?

The job of a remote tester is to work from home to test software or a product and provide feedback to an engineering department. You may help develop a manual for using the product, determine whether or not automation in the product is working, or follow a script to ensure the QA test covers every possible facet of the product. A remote tester often helps to debug software by working to isolate the cause of errors. If you test software, this job may require sitting for extended periods. Qualifications for remote tester jobs typically include a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Tester, you need a solid understanding of software testing methodologies, attention to detail, and experience with test case design—typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with test management tools (like Jira or TestRail), automated testing frameworks (such as Selenium), and bug tracking systems is highly valued. Strong communication, self-motivation, and time management are essential soft skills for collaborating effectively in a remote environment. These skills and qualities ensure accurate, efficient testing and seamless integration with distributed development teams.

What are some common challenges remote testers face when collaborating with distributed development teams?

Remote Testers often work with teams spread across different time zones and locations, which can lead to communication delays and coordination challenges. Staying aligned on testing requirements, build releases, and bug fixes may require proactive communication through tools like Slack, Jira, or daily stand-ups. Building strong relationships and maintaining clear documentation are essential for ensuring testing coverage and timely feedback. Remote Testers also need to be self-motivated and organized to manage their workload independently while staying synced with the team's goals.

What is the difference between Remote Tester vs QA Tester?

AspectRemote TesterQA Tester
CredentialsBasic testing certifications, familiarity with testing toolsSimilar certifications, often includes quality assurance methodologies
Work EnvironmentRemote, home-based or distributed teamsCan be remote or on-site, depending on company
Industry UsageCommon in software, app development, and tech companiesUsed across software, manufacturing, and service industries
Job FocusExecuting test cases, identifying bugs, reporting issuesEnsuring overall quality, process improvement, and compliance

Remote Testers primarily focus on executing tests and identifying bugs in software or applications, often working remotely. QA Testers have a broader role in maintaining quality standards, process audits, and ensuring product compliance. While both roles require similar skills and certifications, Remote Testers are more specialized in testing execution, whereas QA Testers encompass a wider quality assurance scope.

Job description

At WestLand Engineering and Environmental Services, a Trinity Consultants team, we are driven by purpose, innovation, and a shared commitment to the work that we do. As part of Trinity Consultants' Water and Ecology division, we tackle complex environmental challenges, blending expertise in environmental consulting, wetlands, cultural resources, GIS, landscape architecture, and engineering.

WestLand empowers our teams to develop their unique skills while fostering career growth within a company that is large enough to offer diverse opportunities yet agile enough to value individual contributions. Collaboration is at the heart of what we do-our professionals work together on meaningful and impactful projects, delivering solutions that help clients navigate regulatory complexities and see positive project outcomes. Make a difference with us at WestLand!

WestLand is seeking experienced Archaeology Crew Leads to help oversee archaeological survey, testing and data recovery projects. These positions may be based out of either our Reno, Nevada or Salt Lake City, Utah offices. Our crews can be found working throughout the Great Basin and Colorado Plateau regions on CRM projects for private and public sector clients. For out-of-town work that includes overnight, or longer duration stays, per diem and/or single-occupancy hotel rooms are provided.

What will I be doing?

  • Supervise archaeological field work (e.g., field survey, testing, monitoring, and data recovery excavations) independently or under the guidance of a Field Director.
  • Supervise field crews in the recording of artifacts, features, and sites, creating scaled profiles and plans, and maintaining quality paperwork, notes, and records either independently or under the guidance of a Field Director.
  • Performing preliminary project related tasks, including data analysis and lab tasks, under appropriate supervision.
  • File and scan project related records and paperwork.
  • Contribute to tasks related to all phases of project work, including record searches, site record production, and technical report production (including contributions to report sections, tables, and figures) under appropriate supervision.

What qualifications are required for this role?

  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field required.
  • A minimum of one year of supervisory experience as a cultural resource professional in the western U.S.
  • Previous experience working in the Colorado Plateau and/or Great Basin culture regions. Preference will be given to those candidates that are permitted or permittable in Nevada, Idaho, and/or Utah.
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork for long hours in various environments and conditions including extreme temperatures, rough terrain, and potentially high altitudes.
  • Ability to travel for work, occasionally on short notice and for extended periods (paid drive time, M&I per diem, lodging when available). For remote projects where lodging is unavailable, camping may be necessary and additional per diem will be provided.
  • Ability to work and adapt in a fast-paced and creative environment.

The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $30.00 /hour.

What does WestLand offer you?

  • Comprehensive benefits package: 9 paid holidays, healthcare benefits, PTO, and 401k matching for full-time employees. Flexible work schedules and remote/hybrid possibilities for most roles.
  • Multidisciplinary environment: Unique, creative, and challenging projects where you can develop your vision of clientele and work with industry leaders daily.
  • Success-oriented environment: Two-way mentorship, financial incentives to publish work, tuition reimbursement, and a career path structure to help you reach the next steps in your career.
  • Collaborative work environment: Clear and frequent communication, shared information and ideas across teams, and a welcoming atmosphere for everyone.

WestLand is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, gender identity or gender expression, national origin, disability, or veteran status. We maintain a drug-free workplace and perform pre-employment background checks.
