What is remote technical writing?

Remote technical writing involves creating instruction manuals, user guides, FAQs, and other supporting documents for products or services, all while working from a location outside of a traditional office. Remote technical writers communicate complex information clearly and concisely, often collaborating with engineers, developers, and other subject matter experts via digital tools. They need strong writing skills, technical understanding, and the ability to work independently. The remote aspect allows for flexibility in schedule and location, making it a popular choice for writers with technical expertise.

How do remote technical writers typically collaborate with subject matter experts and development teams?

Remote technical writers frequently use a variety of digital collaboration tools to communicate with subject matter experts (SMEs) and development teams. Regular video meetings, chat platforms, and shared documentation spaces like wikis or version control systems help bridge the distance. Proactive communication and clear documentation requests are essential, as writers may not have in-person access to SMEs. Building strong virtual relationships and maintaining organized records of feedback and updates are key strategies for success in a remote environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote technical writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Technical Writer, you need strong writing, editing, and research skills, usually supported by a background in English, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with documentation tools like Microsoft Word, Adobe FrameMaker, Markdown, and content management systems is often required, along with knowledge of version control software. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management are crucial soft skills for collaborating with remote teams and meeting deadlines. These abilities ensure that complex information is conveyed clearly and efficiently, supporting user understanding and business goals in a distributed work environment.

Job description

Descriptions & Requirements
Job Description and Requirements
We Are
Synopsys is the leader in engineering solutions from silicon to systems, enabling customers to rapidly innovate AI-powered products. We deliver industry-leading silicon design, IP, simulation and analysis solutions, and design services. We partner closely with our customers across a wide range of industries to maximize their R&D capability and productivity, powering innovation today that ignites the ingenuity of tomorrow.
You Are
When someone needs something documented well, they turn to you. Period.
You're a fast thinker but a deliberate writer. Curious by nature, you quickly pick up on new concepts then take the time to carefully plan what you'll do with the information. Research is fun. Problem solving is a thrill. Determining the best way to deliver content is second nature.
Above all, you're an effective communicator. Whether it's a full-fledged help system or a simple email, you are always concise, accurate, and clear. You have no problem getting the information you need across time zones and through different product teams, and your persistence is admired by your colleagues.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Writing, editing, and maintaining user-facing documentation for Synopsys EDA and IP products, including installation guides, user manuals, release notes, API references, and tutorials
  • Collaborating directly with software engineers, product managers, and release teams to understand product changes, new features, and technical workflows
  • Determining the right format and delivery method for each piece of content, whether that's structured DITA topics, video tutorials, interactive walkthroughs, or embedded help
  • Revising and updating existing documentation based on product changes, customer feedback and internal reviews, ensuring accuracy and consistency across releases
  • Using tools like MadCap Flare, oXygen XML Editor, SnagIt, and Camtasia to author, version, and publish content
  • Reviewing and testing product functionality hands-on to ensure your documentation matches what users experience
  • Tracking documentation deliverables across multiple product releases, coordinating with cross-functional teams to meet deadlines and quality standards

The Impact You'll Have
  • Engineers and customers will onboard faster and hit fewer roadblocks because your documentation anticipates their questions and guides them through complex workflows
  • Product adoption will improve as users find the answers they need without escalating to support
  • Release cycles will run smoother because your documentation is ready when the product ships
  • Internal teams will spend less time answering the same questions because you've documented the answers and made them easy to find
  • Documentation quality and consistency will improve across the product portfolio as you establish patterns and best practices others can follow
  • Synopsys products will feel more accessible and user-friendly, directly influencing how customers perceive and use our tools
  • Your work will reduce support load and improve customer satisfaction scores tied to documentation quality

What You'll Need
  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, Technical Communication, Computer Science, English, Linguistics, Journalism, or Engineering, plus 2 years of technical writing experience, or a Master's degree
  • Fluency in English with strong writing and editing skills
  • Experience authoring structured documentation using XML-based tools, DITA, or similar content management systems
  • Ability to learn complex software products quickly by working directly with engineers, testing features, and synthesizing information from multiple sources
  • Comfort managing multiple documentation projects simultaneously, each with different deadlines, stakeholders, and technical depth
  • Experience with MadCap Flare, oXygen XML Editor, Git, Camtasia, or any scripting language is a strong plus, as is familiarity with Agile development workflows and how documentation fits into sprint cycles
  • This role is posted as US Remote; we are also open to candidates in other countries who can work primarily US hours and have appropriate work authorization (no new visa sponsorship).

Who You Are
  • You can sit through a product demo, ask clarifying questions, and walk out knowing exactly what needs to be documented and how
  • You push back when a feature description is too vague or a proposed doc structure will confuse the user, and you do it in a way that's productive
  • You test the product yourself before writing about it because you know that reading a spec isn't the same as understanding how something actually works
  • You're comfortable saying "I don't know yet, let me find out" and then actually finding out, whether that means pinging an engineer, digging into code comments, scouring research papers, or running and rerunning the tool yourself
  • You notice inconsistencies in terminology, screenshots, and instructions
  • You treat deadlines seriously and communicate early when something is at risk

The Team You'll Be Part Of
You'll join a documentation team that works across Synopsys product lines, collaborating with engineers, product managers, and other technical writers in a geographically distributed environment. You'll work with some supervision while building expertise in both our products and our documentation standards, tools, and processes. Your recruiter will share more details about team structure and the specific product areas you'll support during the interview process.
Rewards and Benefits
We offer a comprehensive range of health, wellness, and financial benefits to cater to your needs. Our total rewards include both monetary and non-monetary offerings. Your recruiter will provide more details about the salary range and benefits during the hiring process.
At Synopsys, we want talented people of every background to feel valued and supported to do their best work. Synopsys considers all applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, military veteran status, or disability.
In addition to the base salary, this role may be eligible for an annual bonus, equity, and other discretionary bonuses. Synopsys offers comprehensive health, wellness, and financial benefits as part of a competitive total rewards package. The actual compensation offered will be based on a number of job-related factors, including location, skills, experience, and education. Your recruiter can share more specific details on the total rewards package upon request. The base salary range for this role is across the U.S.
