What is a remote technical sound designer?

A Remote Technical Sound Designer is a professional who creates, implements, and optimizes audio elements for digital media—such as video games, films, or apps—while working from a remote location. They combine creative sound design with technical skills, often using specialized audio software and middleware to ensure that sounds integrate seamlessly within interactive environments. Their work includes crafting sound effects, mixing audio, and collaborating with development teams online to achieve the desired auditory experience. Remote Technical Sound Designers need strong communication skills and proficiency with tools like Wwise, FMOD, and various digital audio workstations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote technical sound designer?

A Remote Technical Sound Designer typically needs expertise in audio engineering, sound design principles, and a solid understanding of interactive media or game audio, often supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with industry-standard digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Pro Tools or Reaper, middleware such as Wwise or FMOD, and version control systems is crucial. Strong collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills help bridge the gap between creative vision and technical implementation in a remote team environment. These abilities ensure immersive audio experiences, seamless integration, and efficient teamwork, which are vital in interactive and distributed work settings.

How does a remote technical sound designer typically collaborate with game developers and artists during the production process?

As a Remote Technical Sound Designer, close collaboration with game developers and artists is essential, even from a distance. You’ll often participate in virtual meetings, share feedback through project management tools, and use version control systems to integrate audio assets into the game's build. Regular communication ensures your sound designs align with gameplay mechanics and artistic vision, while troubleshooting audio implementation alongside programmers helps resolve technical issues efficiently. This cross-disciplinary teamwork is vital for delivering an immersive audio experience.

Job description

Senior Fiber Designer (Transport / OSP) - Remote

What We Offer

  • Competitive hourly pay (DOE)
  • Primarily remote position
  • Long-term, full-time opportunity
  • Medical, Dental, Vision & Life Insurance
  • Pet Insurance
  • Short-Term & Long-Term Disability
  • 401(k)
  • Opportunity to work on large-scale carrier and enterprise network infrastructure projects
  • Join a team supporting some of the most advanced telecommunications networks in the industry

About the Senior Fiber Designer Opportunity

We're looking for an experienced Senior Fiber Designer to support complex carrier network infrastructure projects across large-scale transport environments.

This is not a traditional residential FTTH design role. Instead, you'll be designing solutions for high-capacity fiber transport networks, developing migration strategies, creating splice plans, and helping modernize critical telecommunications infrastructure.

The ideal Senior Fiber Designer enjoys solving difficult engineering challenges, thinking critically through complex problems, and finding efficient solutions with minimal direction. If you're naturally curious, analytical, and enjoy tackling projects that require both technical expertise and creative problem-solving, we'd love to hear from you.

What You'll Do as a Senior Fiber Designer

  • Design fiber transport solutions for complex telecommunications networks.
  • Develop high-level and detailed fiber network designs.
  • Create splice plans, routing documentation, and engineering deliverables.
  • Analyze existing fiber infrastructure and recommend migration strategies.
  • Support network modernization and infrastructure transformation projects.
  • Review GIS data, engineering records, and network inventory information.
  • Coordinate with engineering and field teams throughout project execution.
  • Evaluate technical challenges and develop practical, scalable solutions.
  • Help minimize service impacts during network migrations and upgrades.

What We're Looking For in a Senior Fiber Designer

Technical experience is important—but mindset is just as critical.

The engineers who succeed in this role are:

  • Self-starters who take initiative
  • Critical thinkers who enjoy solving difficult problems
  • Strong decision-makers who don't require constant direction
  • Fast learners who adapt quickly to new systems and technologies
  • Detail-oriented professionals who enjoy working through technical challenges
  • Independent contributors who take ownership of their work
  • Individuals who can simplify complex network problems into practical solutions

If you're the type of person who enjoys figuring things out rather than waiting for instructions, you'll fit right in.

Preferred Senior Fiber Designer Experience

We're interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Carrier fiber networks
  • OSP Engineering
  • Fiber transport networks
  • Backbone or long-haul fiber
  • Central Office (CO) environments
  • Data center fiber infrastructure
  • DWDM
  • SONET
  • Network planning
  • Network migrations
  • Service migrations
  • Fiber splice planning
  • Large-count fiber cable design
  • Transport engineering

Experience using any of the following is a plus:

  • ArcGIS
  • 3GIS
  • Smallworld
  • GIS-based planning tools
  • Telecom inventory systems
  • Fiber management platforms

Who Will Be Successful?

The strongest candidates aren't necessarily the ones who know every software platform—they're the ones who can think through challenging engineering problems.

If you enjoy solving puzzles, making sound technical decisions, learning new technologies, and working independently on complex telecommunications projects, this could be an excellent fit.

Please Note

This role focuses on carrier and transport network engineering and is best suited for candidates with experience designing large-scale telecommunications infrastructure. Professionals whose experience has been limited exclusively to residential FTTH drop design may find this position significantly different from traditional fiber design roles.
