What does a remote technical solutions architect do?

A Remote Technical Solutions Architect is responsible for designing and implementing technical solutions for clients or within an organization, all while working from a remote location. They analyze business needs, develop system architectures, and ensure that proposed technology solutions align with organizational goals. Additionally, they often collaborate with development teams, stakeholders, and clients to guide projects from conception to deployment. Their role often includes troubleshooting complex problems, recommending best practices, and ensuring the scalability and security of solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote technical solutions architect?

To thrive as a Remote Technical Solutions Architect, you need deep expertise in software architecture, systems integration, and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), infrastructure-as-code tools, and certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect are typically expected. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to collaborate effectively in a virtual environment distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure solutions are robust, scalable, and aligned with client needs while facilitating smooth remote collaboration and project delivery.

How does a remote technical solutions architect typically collaborate with cross-functional teams while working offsite?

As a Remote Technical Solutions Architect, effective collaboration with cross-functional teams is essential and often achieved through regular virtual meetings, collaborative cloud-based tools, and clear documentation. You will work closely with developers, project managers, and stakeholders to understand requirements, design scalable solutions, and troubleshoot technical challenges. Strong communication skills and proactive engagement are crucial, as you may be responsible for aligning technical strategies across geographically dispersed teams. This role often requires balancing independent work with frequent team interactions to ensure seamless project delivery.

  • Cloud & platform architecture - Architect solutions on approved cloud and platform services (e.g., Microsoft Azure), optimizing for performance, resilience, security, and cost.
  • AI & emerging technology - Evaluate and incorporate AI/ML, automation, and emerging technologies into solution designs, and advise on their responsible and appropriate application to M&T use cases.
  • Security & compliance by design - Embed Bechtel information-security, privacy, and data-governance requirements into all architectures, and ensure designs meet applicable regulatory and quality-management (e.g., ISO) requirements.
  • Technical evaluation & governance - Assess technology options, products, and vendors; produce architecture decision records, trade-off analyses, and recommendations; and participate in architecture and change-governance reviews.
  • Documentation & knowledge transfer - Produce and maintain solution architecture artifacts (diagrams, specifications, and standards) and mentor engineers and analysts on architectural best practices.
  • Roadmap & advisory - Support the M&T Head of Digital & AI Strategy and M&T Data and AI Chief Architect with technology roadmaps, feasibility assessments, and estimates that inform portfolio and investment decisions.
