Job description

Tighten is looking for a Project Manager to join our team!
About Us
We are a US-based, fully remote agency that specializes in web application development. We help our clients by building their web apps and development teams, and we're also often brought in to rescue existing apps and teams. We've been working for the last 15 years to build what we think is one of the best small software companies anywhere, measured not just by the quality of the software and service we deliver to our clients, but also by our ability to nurture and sustain an environment where people can thrive, both personally and professionally.
We are a small team of ~15, composed mainly of programmers and project managers. The team is spread out across North and South America, and while we're fully remote, we have a close, synchronous communication style and team culture.
Please learn more about our core values here: https://tighten.com/about/
Please learn more about some projects we've worked on here: https://tighten.com/results/
Project Manager Role
We're hiring for an entry-to-mid-level Project Manager to join our team. Our project managers are client-facing and technical; comfort with client interactions and account management is a requirement, but we're fine for you to learn the technical aspect on the job.
Tighten's project managers play an essential role in setting the Tighten team up for success in our day-to-day project needs. We build software incrementally - we call it agile, but not Agile - delivering working code early and often. We take pride in having one of the fastest, most productive web application development teams in the world, and this comes from two primary places: a suite of extraordinarily talented developers, and a process by which we enable those developers to achieve peak productivity.
Our project managers are in charge of guiding, refining, and applying that process on a project-by-project basis. Your day-to-day will entail:
  • Leading weekly internal status and client meetings.
  • Leading client-facing team communication
  • Proactively identifying risks and solutions related to project development, budget, resources, and schedule.
  • Organizing and managing overall project workflow and strategy from start to finish. That will include the ability to thrive with 1-4 projects at once and working with our Director of Projects and other Tighten team members for a successful project journey.
  • Providing direction and support to the team on the tasks and deliverables required. This will include capturing detailed client requirements and helping rally the team around a single source of truth.
  • Applying creative problem-solving and critical thinking in order to mitigate client and team risk, and also leaning on others from the team - to ask for help, and to ensure the Tighten team is on the same page.
  • Developing positive working relationships with colleagues and client contacts.
  • Learning Tighten systems and processes.
    • For the first month: gain a foundational understanding of the types of projects that Tighten has, the range of work that we support, and a basic understanding of how we support that work. Be able to take on shared project responsibilities by shadowing a project manager on our team, learning from them, and taking on your own individual tasks.
    • After two to three months: Be able to lead a project on your own, raise flags with the team as needed, and help support the Tighten project management team.

Diversity and Inclusion
We strive to assemble and maintain the highest quality, most effective team of people we can.
We know that the best teams have a broad variety of perspectives, and that new perspectives come from a diversity of backgrounds and experiences. These goals and beliefs lead us to actively seek a team that includes people from groups who have been traditionally underrepresented in the tech industry and in our company.
Requirements
We are looking for an individual who has the below qualifications and qualities:
  • You have the ability to overlap significantly with US-based time zones.
    • Note: It's very unlikely we hire someone who isn't in North or South America. The absolutely most exceptional candidates may override this preference, but anyone outside North or South America will have a harder time getting the job.
  • You have 1-3 years of client-facing project management experience or a similar experience in a client-facing role.
  • You have excellent written and verbal English communication skills. You are transparent and natural at clear and consistent communication.
  • You are a problem-solver, always asking questions, and thinking ahead.
  • You are detail-oriented and have a proven ability and curiosity to learn and self-educate.
  • You have familiarity with development projects or at least prioritization management.
  • When asked for your favorite movie, you specifically mention the animal Capybara - even if just as simply as "My favorite movie is X, which has no capybaras". We really just want to make sure you read this list.

If this sounds like a fit for you, but you're worried that you might be missing some of the qualifications, we still encourage you to apply! We'd love to hear from you.
Applications closing 11:59pm eastern September 11.
Benefits
Why You Should Consider Applying
  • We don't work overtime. Put in a good day's work and go back to the rest of your life.
  • We set aside Fridays for professional development, open source contribution, and internal efforts.
  • We don't work when we're not well. Your physical and mental well-being are equally important parts of being a healthy person and worker.
  • We foster interests outside of technology and programming and we share our knowledge with others.
  • We live by the ethos of saying what you mean, respectfully, and expect the same from your colleagues.
  • We are personal-life-friendly. Shape your work day around your personal or family life, not the other way around.
  • We hire outstanding people. Each and every person who works with us is a good, thoughtful, and conscientious individual. This fact makes us extremely proud, and it also makes coming to work a pleasure rather than a chore.
  • We offer Health/Dental/Vision Insurance, 401(k) with generous employer match, 3 weeks paid time off and paid holidays, and a Wellness stipend to US-based employees. International employees' benefits depend on their country and can be discussed on a case-by-case basis.
  • $75,000-85,000 USD/year salary for US-based employees, depending on experience and fit; non-US based employees salary adjusted on case-by-base basis based on locale
