Remote Tech Startup information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive at a remote tech startup, and why are they important?

To thrive at a remote tech startup, you need strong technical expertise relevant to your role (such as software development, product management, or design), problem-solving abilities, and experience working in agile or fast-paced environments. Familiarity with collaboration tools like Slack, GitHub, Jira, and cloud-based platforms, as well as remote work best practices, is typically expected. Outstanding self-motivation, adaptability, proactive communication, and time-management skills set top performers apart in remote settings. These skills are crucial for delivering results, fostering innovation, and maintaining alignment within distributed teams.

What are the unique challenges of working at a remote tech startup, and how can I prepare for them?

Working at a remote tech startup often means adapting to fast-paced changes, collaborating across time zones, and staying self-motivated without direct supervision. Communication is key, as teams rely heavily on digital tools to stay connected and aligned on goals. To succeed, it's important to be proactive in seeking feedback, comfortable with ambiguity, and disciplined in managing your time. Embracing flexibility and being open to learning new technologies or processes will help you thrive in this dynamic environment.

What is a remote tech startup?

A remote tech startup is a new technology-based company that operates with a distributed team, meaning employees work from various locations rather than a centralized office. These startups leverage digital tools and platforms to collaborate, communicate, and build products or services. Remote tech startups often benefit from accessing a global talent pool, reducing overhead costs, and offering flexible work arrangements. However, they also face challenges such as coordinating across time zones and maintaining team cohesion.

Job description

About the Team

The Finance & Strategy team accelerates the growth of our business by identifying and implementing new opportunities and solutions. We partner with teams across the company to improve the profitability, scalability and defensibility of our business model. We're looking for someone who can get in the weeds of all three sides of our marketplace to drive cost savings, using critical thinking, analysis and AI tools.

We expect this role to be hybrid at our office in Toronto with some time in-office and some time remote. This role reports to a Manager in our Finance & Strategy organization based in NYC.

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Associate who will work with partners across DoorDash to ensure we are making efficient, data-driven decisions. You will partner with teams across the business to drive data-driven decisions that improve order quality, reduce costs, and support the long-term health of the platform.

You're excited about this opportunity because you will...
  • Conduct weekly reporting of financial performance for DoorDash's quality cost areas (cancellations, credits and refunds redeliveries), forecast key financial metrics based on quantitative analysis of historical data, and partner with cross-functional teams to investigate variances and identify trends
  • Support quarterly financial planning, collaborate with cross functional business partners to identify growth areas and business priorities.
  • Deep-dive into complex operational questions and collaborate cross-functionally outside Finance (Operations, Product, Fraud) as well as within Finance (Accounting, Analytics, BI) to uncover the most optimal data-driven business decisions and investments
  • Identify key opportunities & risks to the business, quantify and evaluate the impacts, propose a solution and investment case, and ensure efficient executionย
  • Leverage and apply knowledge of SQL, finance, analytics, and technology to manage financial reporting, forecasting, and quantitative analysis to assist DoorDash in making better business decisions
We're excited about you because...
  • 4+ years of experience overall, preferably from Strategic Finance, Corporate Finance, Investment Banking, or Consulting at a high-growth technology startup or well-established company
  • Advanced Excel & financial modeling skills. Able to build robust financial models used by teams throughout the company, and to size the impacts of opportunities and business cases for pursuing new initiatives
  • Basic SQL proficiency (or willingness to learn). Able to manipulate large data sets, uncover hidden insights in our data, and meaningfully improve our understanding of our business through this process
  • Comfortable with and/or willingness to learn use cases for AI within financial modeling and analysis
