About the Role
Koalafi is looking for Software Engineers to help build and scale the products and platforms that power our financing solutions. As part of a cross-functional team of product managers, engineers, and technical leaders, you'll contribute to customer-facing applications, internal tools, and backend services that support critical business functions across the company.
We're seeking engineers who enjoy solving complex problems, building reliable systems, and collaborating closely with teammates to deliver meaningful business impact. Depending on team placement, you'll work on a mix of new product development, platform enhancements, system integrations, and modernization efforts that help us deliver a seamless experience for customers, merchants, and internal stakeholders.
This role offers the opportunity to work across a modern technology stack, contribute to both new and existing systems, and help shape solutions in a fast-moving environment. Success in this position requires curiosity, strong technical fundamentals, and the ability to navigate unfamiliar codebases while continuously improving the systems around you.
What You'll Do
Build and Deliver
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs
  • Build integrations with internal and third-party systems
  • Contribute to customer-facing applications and internal tools using modern frontend technologies
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code
  • Participate in the design and implementation of distributed systems, workflows, and event-driven architectures
  • Support initiatives that improve performance, reliability, and scalability across the platform

Collaborate and Contribute
  • Partner with Product, Design, Compliance, and Engineering teammates to deliver high-quality solutions
  • Participate in technical design discussions and architecture reviews
  • Conduct and receive code reviews with a focus on continuous improvement
  • Contribute actively to Agile development processes, including planning, standups, retrospectives, and backlog refinement
  • Share knowledge and collaborate across teams to solve complex business and technical challenges

Maintain and Improve
  • Implement monitoring, alerting, and observability best practices
  • Support operational excellence through troubleshooting, incident response, and root cause analysis
  • Identify technical debt and opportunities for system improvements
  • Contribute to security, compliance, and audit requirements as appropriate
  • Leverage modern development tools, including AI-assisted engineering tools, to improve productivity and code quality

About You
  • 2-5 years of professional software engineering experience
  • Experience building backend services using Golang
  • Working knowledge of REST APIs, HTTP/JSON, authentication mechanisms, and API testing tools
  • Experience developing web applications using modern frontend frameworks such as React and TypeScript
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms and containerized environments, preferably AWS and Kubernetes
  • Understanding of software engineering best practices including testing, code reviews, and CI/CD
  • Experience working with relational and/or NoSQL databases
  • Ability to navigate existing codebases and contribute effectively to both new and established systems
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Desire to learn, grow, and take ownership of technical solutions

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with event-driven architectures and asynchronous messaging patterns
  • Experience in fintech, lending, payments, e-commerce, or other highly regulated industries
  • Familiarity with observability and monitoring platforms
  • Experience working with microservices architectures
  • Knowledge of cloud security and secrets management
  • Interest in leveraging AI tools to accelerate software development

Location: Richmond, VA; Arlington, VA; or Remote (U.S.). Associates near one of our office locations may work in-office, hybrid, or remotely. Remote opportunities are available to candidates throughout the United States.
Salary Range: $115,000-$141,000 per year (depending on experience and location)
Additional Compensation: This position is eligible to participate in company bonus plan.
The final salary offer will depend on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, and geographic location. The actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.
