Remote Systems Architect information

What is a remote systems architect?

Remote Systems Architects are IT professionals who design and oversee the structure of complex computer systems, networks, or software applications from a remote location. They are responsible for making high-level decisions about system architecture, ensuring that systems are scalable, secure, and meet the needs of the business. Working remotely, they collaborate with stakeholders, developers, and other IT staff through digital communication tools. Their role often involves creating architectural blueprints, selecting appropriate technologies, and providing technical guidance throughout a project’s lifecycle.

How do remote systems architects typically collaborate with cross-functional teams when designing complex system solutions?

Remote Systems Architects often serve as a communication bridge between engineering, product, and business teams, ensuring that system designs align with both technical requirements and business objectives. Collaboration is typically facilitated through regular virtual meetings, detailed documentation, and cloud-based project management tools. Architects are responsible for leading design discussions, gathering feedback from stakeholders, and iterating on solutions to address evolving needs. This role requires strong communication skills and adaptability to effectively manage contributions from colleagues in different locations and time zones.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote systems architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Systems Architect, you need deep expertise in systems design, cloud infrastructure, and software architecture, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools such as AWS, Azure, architecture modeling software, and relevant certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect are highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating with distributed teams and clients. These skills ensure scalable, secure, and efficient system solutions while enabling effective remote teamwork and project delivery.

What is the difference between Remote Systems Architect vs Remote Network Engineer?

Job description

ICF's Digital Modernization Division is seeking an experienced, growth-oriented Salesforce Practice Architect to support enterprise digital transformation initiatives for public sector and federal clients. This is a high-visibility leadership role focused on driving scalable, platform-based Salesforce solutions that align to mission outcomes and long-term modernization goals. The ideal candidate brings deep experience in designing and delivering complex Salesforce ecosystems and serves as a trusted advisor to both internal leaders and clients. This role combines hands-on solutioning with strategic engagement-supporting early-stage client conversations, shaping technical approaches, and leading solution design for high-priority opportunities. A strong emphasis is placed on capture and proposal support, where the architect will own technical solutioning for key bids, guide business development teams, and help expand ICF's Salesforce practice through innovative, compliant, and competitive solutions.
Why Senior Architects Join ICF
  • Opportunity to shape highly visible public sector transformation programs
  • Ability to influence both pursuits and delivery outcomes-not just one or the other
  • Access to complex enterprise architecture challenges across federal and state agencies
  • Strong partnership ecosystem across Salesforce and adjacent platforms
  • Entrepreneurial environment where architects help shape offerings, innovation, and strategy
  • Collaborative culture that values technical leadership, mentorship, and mission impact

Work Environment & Travel
  • 100% remote work anywhere outside of a 50-mile radius of Washington, DC is acceptable (preferred alignment with Eastern Time). However, prefer candidates in the Metro DMV area so they can be onsite ICF HQ or client site for meetings, when needed.
  • Up to 10% travel may be required, including occasional meetings in the Metro DMV area

What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
  • 12+ years of experience designing and implementing Salesforce or comparable SaaS enterprise solutions
  • 5+ years of experience leading the development of complex solutions with a strong enterprise architecture background, including integrations, security, scalability, and platform governance
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency required
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Federal Public Trust and/or Security Clearance
  • Must reside and work within the United States
  • Certified in one or more mainline certifications, with preference for the following:
    • Salesforce Certified Application Architect
    • Salesforce Certified System Architect
    • Salesforce Certified Data Architect
    • Salesforce Certified Integration Architect
    • Salesforce Certified Technical Architect (CTA)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified in one or more mainline certifications, with preference for the following:
    • Salesforce Certified OmniStudio Consultant
    • Salesforce Certified Public Sector Solutions Accreditation
    • Salesforce Certified Platform Developer I
    • Salesforce Certified Agentforce Specialist
  • Experience with:
    • Salesforce Public Sector Solutions (PSS)
    • OmniStudio
    • MuleSoft
    • Salesforce Data 360
    • Agentforce / AI-enabled Salesforce capabilities
  • Experience supporting Department of War (Defense), civilian federal agencies, or FedRAMP/high-security environments preferred
  • Demonstrated experience balancing client-facing solutioning/pursuit work with hands-on architecture and delivery leadership
  • Experience supporting proposals, oral presentations, technical demonstrations, and executive-level client discussions.
  • Experience leading large-scale public sector modernization initiatives
  • Prior consulting or systems integrator experience supporting enterprise clients
  • Hands-on experience using Codex, LLM-based tools, and agentic AI workflows to accelerate software delivery within Salesforce environments.
