Remote Systems Architect information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Systems Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Systems Architect, you need deep expertise in systems design, cloud infrastructure, and software architecture, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools such as AWS, Azure, architecture modeling software, and relevant certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect are highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating with distributed teams and clients. These skills ensure scalable, secure, and efficient system solutions while enabling effective remote teamwork and project delivery.

How much does a remote architect make?

A remote systems architect typically earns between $100,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and industry. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in cloud platforms or enterprise architecture can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $160,000 per year.

Is it possible to work remotely as an architect?

Remote systems architects can work remotely, especially with the increasing adoption of cloud computing and collaboration tools. Many organizations allow architects to design and plan systems from home, provided they have strong communication skills and access to necessary software and hardware. However, some roles may require occasional on-site visits for meetings or implementation.

How do Remote Systems Architects typically collaborate with cross-functional teams when designing complex system solutions?

Remote Systems Architects often serve as a communication bridge between engineering, product, and business teams, ensuring that system designs align with both technical requirements and business objectives. Collaboration is typically facilitated through regular virtual meetings, detailed documentation, and cloud-based project management tools. Architects are responsible for leading design discussions, gathering feedback from stakeholders, and iterating on solutions to address evolving needs. This role requires strong communication skills and adaptability to effectively manage contributions from colleagues in different locations and time zones.

What is the difference between Remote Systems Architect vs Remote Network Engineer?

AspectRemote Systems ArchitectRemote Network Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in computer science or IT, plus certifications like TOGAF or AWS Certified Solutions ArchitectOften requires a degree in networking or IT, with certifications such as Cisco CCNA or CCNP
Work EnvironmentDesigns and plans overall system architecture, often in a project-based or consulting settingFocuses on configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting network infrastructure
Industry UsageUsed across industries for system design, cloud solutions, and enterprise architecturePrimarily in telecommunications, data centers, and enterprise network management

While both roles involve IT infrastructure, a Remote Systems Architect focuses on designing comprehensive system solutions, whereas a Remote Network Engineer specializes in implementing and maintaining network hardware and connectivity. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Will AI replace Solution Architect?

As a Remote Systems Architect, AI is expected to augment rather than replace the role, automating routine tasks and supporting decision-making. Solution Architects will continue to be essential for designing complex systems, integrating AI tools, and ensuring alignment with business goals. Strong skills in cloud platforms, system design, and AI integration remain valuable in this evolving landscape.

What are Remote Systems Architects?

Remote Systems Architects are IT professionals who design and oversee the structure of complex computer systems, networks, or software applications from a remote location. They are responsible for making high-level decisions about system architecture, ensuring that systems are scalable, secure, and meet the needs of the business. Working remotely, they collaborate with stakeholders, developers, and other IT staff through digital communication tools. Their role often involves creating architectural blueprints, selecting appropriate technologies, and providing technical guidance throughout a project’s lifecycle.

Are system architects in demand?

System architects are in high demand due to the increasing complexity of IT infrastructure and the need for scalable, secure systems. Organizations seek professionals with expertise in cloud computing, cybersecurity, and enterprise architecture to design and implement effective solutions.

Named one of the Best Places to Work in the Washington DC area for 12 consecutive years, Valiant is proud of our employee-centric culture and commitment to excellence. If you are interested in learning more about Valiant and this opportunity, we invite you to apply now!

Location: The Senior Systems Architect can expect 100% telework. Remote work requires a high level of trust in our employees, and we strictly adhere to the details outlined in our Remote Work Policy below.

Eligibility Requirements: U.S. Citizenship is required due to federal contract obligations, and applicants must be able to successfully pass a federal background investigation.

Required Experience:

  • Twelve or more years of experience supporting cybersecurity information technology.
  • Three or more years of experience supporting cloud-based solutions.
  • AWS Solution Architect certification (required).

  • Demonstrated understanding of the software development, enhancement, and maintenance lifecycle.
  • Ability to perform complex technical tasks.
  • Strong technical understanding of cybersecurity deployment, functionality, and operation of capabilities including SIEM, EDR, CDM, penetration testing, DevSecOps, Identity and Access Management, and AWS GovCloud systems.
  • Experience with EKS, ECS, and containerized environments.
  • Strong knowledge of recent technological advances in computer science and engineering.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Required to obtain and maintain a Non-Sensitive / High Risk (Public Trust) security clearance, Tier 4/6c.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional AWS certifications such as AWS Certified Security - Specialty, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, or AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialty.

  • Experience with FedRAMP-approved cloud service provider integration in federal environments.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation) and policy-as-code frameworks.
  • Familiarity with the client Technology Standards and Products Guide and client Lifecycle Management Methodology (LMM).

Responsibilities:

  • Own the operational, technical, and informational architectures supporting client's cybersecurity systems and services.
  • Discern customer requirements, validate that architecture models address them, and confirm technical requirements and architecture quality attributes before designs move forward.
  • Develop and explain IT solutions grounded in client's strategic business and technical requirements, defining the structuring approach for each application and the appropriate use of technology.
  • Design and validate enterprise security architectures aligned with Zero Trust principles and NIST SP 800-207, including identity-centric access control, micro-segmentation, continuous monitoring, and least-privilege enforcement.
  • Lead development of Engineering Design Documents (EDDs), architecture blueprints, control implementation matrices, current and target state diagrams, data flow diagrams, and security zone definitions.
  • Design, integrate, and govern enterprise cloud architecture solutions on AWS GovCloud, with focus on EKS, ECS, and containerized environments.
  • Design and maintain security controls that support CI/CD and DevOps infrastructure, integrating with client's DevSecOps pipelines.
  • Direct the integration of SIEM, SOAR, CDM, TDSP, EDR, AWS cloud-native services, and identity platforms across the client cybersecurity tool portfolio.
  • Manage IT applications projects, including the design, development, and implementation of components of the IT architecture, and oversee solution roadmaps from vision through execution.
  • Develop and communicate architectural proposals for projects and initiatives, including comparative analyses, implementation roadmaps, cost, risk, and operational impact.
  • Develop and coordinate IT strategy and oversee implementation of integrated systems, replacing legacy solutions with modern alternatives per the lifecycle management strategy.
  • Collaborate with business owners, analysts, engineers, development teams, and infrastructure services to define, establish, and communicate application and data architecture standards, policies, and directions.
  • Design, validate, and implement scalable system infrastructure, and evaluate complex systems architecture for performance and efficiency improvements.
  • Maintain and evaluate current equipment and recommend modernization, cloud migration, and secure system design approaches.
