Remote Systems Architect information

What is a remote systems architect?

Remote Systems Architects are IT professionals who design and oversee the structure of complex computer systems, networks, or software applications from a remote location. They are responsible for making high-level decisions about system architecture, ensuring that systems are scalable, secure, and meet the needs of the business. Working remotely, they collaborate with stakeholders, developers, and other IT staff through digital communication tools. Their role often involves creating architectural blueprints, selecting appropriate technologies, and providing technical guidance throughout a project’s lifecycle.

How do remote systems architects typically collaborate with cross-functional teams when designing complex system solutions?

Remote Systems Architects often serve as a communication bridge between engineering, product, and business teams, ensuring that system designs align with both technical requirements and business objectives. Collaboration is typically facilitated through regular virtual meetings, detailed documentation, and cloud-based project management tools. Architects are responsible for leading design discussions, gathering feedback from stakeholders, and iterating on solutions to address evolving needs. This role requires strong communication skills and adaptability to effectively manage contributions from colleagues in different locations and time zones.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote systems architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Systems Architect, you need deep expertise in systems design, cloud infrastructure, and software architecture, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools such as AWS, Azure, architecture modeling software, and relevant certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect are highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating with distributed teams and clients. These skills ensure scalable, secure, and efficient system solutions while enabling effective remote teamwork and project delivery.

What is the difference between Remote Systems Architect vs Remote Network Engineer?

Job description

System Architect | Dashboarding and Metrics SME
Overview:
Support the systems and infrastructure behind USGS's national geospatial mission through dashboard development, monitoring, metrics, and automation. As part of the U.S. Geological Survey's National Geospatial Technical Operations Center (NGTOC), this position helps maintain the technical environments that support trusted geospatial data, services, and products used across the Nation.
As a System Architect focused on Dashboarding and Metrics, you will work at the intersection of systems administration, infrastructure monitoring, reporting, and automation. You will develop and manage dashboards and reporting solutions that turn system and infrastructure data into clear, actionable insights, helping teams monitor performance, identify issues, and maintain operational visibility. You will also support the automation and management of Linux and Windows environments, helping streamline recurring processes, improve system reliability, and strengthen the overall efficiency of the infrastructure.
If you're a systems professional looking for an opportunity where your technical expertise can directly support a broader mission, this position offers a chance to make a meaningful impact within the geospatial community.
Salary Range: $60,000 - $70,000
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field with 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience administering Linux and Windows operating systems in enterprise environments
  • Experience developing and managing dashboards, reports, and metrics using enterprise monitoring and visualization platforms to collect, analyze, and present system and infrastructure performance data and operational health
  • Experience with scripting and automation to streamline system administration, configuration management, monitoring, or other recurring infrastructure processes
  • Experience with configuration management and automation tools such as Ansible, Powershell, Puppet, or similar technologies
  • Experience supporting virtualized infrastructure, including VMware, KVM, or similar platforms
  • Familiarity with monitoring and observability technologies such as Grafana, Zabbix Prometheus, Alloy, InfluxDB, or comparable tools
  • Strong problem solving, troubleshooting, and communication skills with the ability to identify system issues, analyze operational data, develop practical solutions, and clearly communicate technical findings and recommendations to team members and stakeholders
