What is a remote surplus lines insurance job?

Remote surplus lines insurance jobs involve working from a location outside of a traditional office to place or manage insurance policies that cover risks not typically handled by standard insurers. Surplus lines insurance professionals help clients obtain coverage for unique or high-risk situations that admitted carriers may not insure. These roles often include underwriting, brokering, compliance, or customer service, and require knowledge of state regulations and surplus lines laws. Working remotely, employees use digital tools to communicate with clients, underwriters, and regulatory bodies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote surplus lines insurance specialist?

To thrive as a Remote Surplus Lines Insurance Specialist, you need a solid understanding of insurance principles, surplus lines regulations, and typically a state surplus lines license. Familiarity with surplus lines filing systems, underwriting software, and compliance platforms is commonly required. Strong attention to detail, self-motivation, and excellent communication skills are vital soft skills for effective remote work and client interactions. These skills ensure compliance with complex regulations, minimize risk, and foster trustworthy client relationships in a specialized insurance market.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote surplus lines insurance roles?

One of the main challenges in remote surplus lines insurance is staying current with the constantly changing regulatory requirements, which can vary widely by state and jurisdiction. Additionally, working remotely requires strong self-motivation and excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with underwriters, brokers, and clients across different locations and time zones. Managing complex, non-standard risks and coordinating with multiple stakeholders often demands strong organizational abilities and attention to detail. However, many organizations provide ongoing training and digital tools to help remote employees remain compliant and connected.

What is the difference between Remote Surplus Lines Insurance vs Remote Insurance Underwriter?

While both roles require insurance licenses and involve risk assessment, surplus lines roles emphasize sales and client relationships, whereas underwriters focus on risk analysis and policy approval within the company.

Job description

About SafeLease
At SafeLease, we're rethinking how P&C insurance is sold in an age of technological change. We believe the industry's biggest inefficiencies aren't technical problems - they're structural ones. And we're building the team to tackle them.
SafeLease is a profitable insurance business that designs, underwrites, and distributes specialty coverage for commercial property owners and their tenants. Most insurance companies either distribute products or bear the risk - we do both. We back our policies with our own capital, which means we control the full stack: product design, tech, and the speed at which we move. That end-to-end ownership lets us offer customers real flexibility, saving time and money for more than 4,000 properties insured for billions in value nationwide.
We're a team of 70, growing over 100% annually, and we've done it without sacrificing profitability or culture. Here, you'll get high discretion and a wide aperture of problems to solve. We embrace the newest technologies, move fast together, and operate with the intensity of a small company where every person's work is visible. If you're looking for a place to sharpen your craft alongside people who take their work seriously, you'll fit right in.
We are on the hunt for an Account Executive, focused on P&C Insurance to join our team and expand our rapidly growing list of clients. SafeLease has launched a property and casualty product that has been built from the ground up and tailored for self-storage. There are over 50,000 self-storage facilities in the United States and skyrocketing insurance premiums have become a major pain point in the industry. SafeLease's P&C product aims to help facility owners solve that pain with the most customizable product available.
About The Role
We have big aspirations for this business segment and are looking for entrepreneurial team members who share the same level of ambition.
To drive our mission forward, this role will:
  • Cultivate connections: Build and maintain relationships with self-storage property owners and key stakeholders nationwide
  • Drive sales: Quote and secure both new and renewal property and casualty insurance policies
  • Customize solutions: Tailor policy coverages and deductibles to meet each customer's specific needs
  • Collaborate effectively: Work with underwriters to provide all required information promptly and accurately
  • Enhance customer experience: Collaborate with other SafeLease teams to deliver seamless and positive buying experiences
  • Provide support: Address inquiries about coverages, premiums, endorsements, accounting, or claims as needed
  • Engage in industry: Attend industry events, with occasional travel as required
About You
  • 5+ years selling property and casualty insurance, license in good standing
  • Top tier networker - Someone who enjoys building relationships with executives and has a proven ability to maintain a large book of relationships
  • Excellent written and communication and professional presentation skills
  • Technical insurance knowledge - demonstrate high degree of knowledge of insurance coverage forms and policies
  • Motivated to help build out and establish a newer line of business within a fast growing insurance startup
  • Experience with non-admitted/surplus lines policies a plus
  • Self-storage industry or general commercial real estate experience a plus

Why SafeLease?
The tech: Our prospects convert fast because we're solving real problems and delivering serious value to commercial real estate owners.
The team: We're a team of seasoned pros and sharp operators who know how to move fast and build smart. High standards, low ego.
The stability: We're well-funded, growing fast, and we make sure our team shares in that success with competitive pay and equity.
The employee experience: We also offer unlimited PTO, full health benefits, flexible work setups, and the kind of culture where people want to show up to do their best work.
If you don't have all the qualifications listed, don't worry! We understand everyone's career path is unique and still encourage you to apply if you feel this role is aligned with your career trajectory.
Employment at SafeLease is contingent upon a satisfactory verification of a general and criminal background check.
